Another STRIKE for Airsoft at Ohio U.

Ohio U. basketball player convicted of shooting sorority girls with Airsoft gun
By Emilie Schneider
October 21, 2008
Source: The Post, Ohio U.
EmailPrint

An Ohio University basketball player was suspended indefinitely from the team following an incident in his dormitory, according to a news release.

Sophomore Maurice Pearson, 18, was found guilty of aggravated menacing and assault last Thursday, after shooting two Delta Gamma Sorority members with an Airsoft gun on the second floor of James Hall on Sept. 24. Pearson pleaded no contest to the charges of aggravated menacing and assault and not guilty to the charge of inducing panic, which the prosecutor later dismissed.

An Airsoft gun is a gun that shoots at low velocities with soft pellets.

Pearson was fined and ordered to four days of house arrest. In addition, Pearson is ordered not to contact the victims.

Ohio men's basketball coach John Groce and Ohio director of athletics Jim Schaus had no comment.

Pearsonís pre-trial will be 8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6.

We seriously need to start discussing a possible rule change prohibiting this stuff. If I had $1 for every "OMG AIRSOFT BAD IN THE NEWS" threads that was posted on AO, I'd give Bill Gates a run for his money.

There is nothing we can possibly do that we haven't been doing already that can prevent this type of thing from happening. Posting these things weekly is just panic-mongering, and isn't productive.

:/

Honestly, I never hear about any of these things until it is said here. Hell, there was an airsoft gun problem at my school a few years back while I was in the building and I didn't hear about it until someone mentioned it here.
We may as well just not bother posting them, as Loki said, because more often than not it doens't make it anywhere past local News, and it doesn't always make it there anyway.

The problem is new members don't know about the "we already know". Isn't there a way to make it mandatory reading or something?

Dude, we can't even get people to not block the activation email. I've had to manually activate about 50 new accounts in the past month. I know that they're still being sent out, because I created a test account to see if it was still working. As of right now, there is no way to force anyone to read the forum rules and regulations.

Another alternative is we could just create a forum where this kind of stuff could be posted. Maybe "airsoft in the news" or something. Set the forum up to auto-delete the threads after a certain length of inactivity.

personally I don't mind the news threads. I think there are plenty of people on these boards that still need to be reminded of what not to do with an airsoft gun.

Sorry about making ppl angry about stuff like this. Didnt see it on any of the threads Or on the news.

IT was just some info that I herd form a student at Ohio U.
so I looked it up.
no harm ment.

and by the way I did read your rules

Please take a moment to review our rules. These may seem harsh compared to a lot of the other airsoft websites on the internet, but these rules have kept us from descending to the barely-controlled chaos that plagues the aforementioned sites. If you have any questions about these, feel free to message me on the forums, and I'd be happy to help. There might be other forum-specific rules located in individual forums, so please keep an eye out for them and review them as well! Thanks!

1) The Golden Rule - If you don't have anything constructive to say about a question someone asks, then stay out of it. There has been a lot of comments to the extent of "GTFO" recently. These are overtly disrespectful, and since one can argue that the comments were "in jest" this is no longer allowed. Do NOT insult people in the forums publicly, even if you know them. Insulting administrators and moderators is even worse.

2) No "Yes Man" posting is allowed - If it has already been said, then it doesn't need said again, the exception to this rule being one concerning with votes or polls.

3) Isthisguncoolisthisguncoolisthisguncool? - A LOT of stuff has been covered previously in these forums(or elsewhere), and most of that more than once. The only time you should really ask a question is if it has not been answered before. If you're lazy and don't at least attempt to look, it makes it look like you are out for a quick fix of information, almost like a junkie would look for his fix. Whereas if you look up a bit of information yourself and ask informed questions, you look like someone who has put effort into a post, and wishes to further their knowledge about a topic. So who are you? A scholar or a junkie?

4) English Mothertrucker! Do you speak it?? - There is a spell checker supplied at the the bottom of a "new post" screen that is directly next to "Preview Post button". Spelling and Puncuation go hand in hand, and this rule applies to both.

5) Signature line size is not equal to cool points! - Due to the excessive amount of banners/userbars/quotes in signature lines we have now reinstituted an old policy, along with a new twist. You may have:
A. A large banner with dimensions no greater than 470(W)x72(H) pixels.
-or-
B. A total of no more than 4 (four) userbars, regardless of the size. However, these userbars cannot exceed 470x70 pixels.
-or-
C. No more than 2 (two) quotes in your signature.
-or-
D. No more than 1 (one) quote, and 2 (two) userbars.

6) MPD/DID - This means you are not permitted to have more than one account. It should be fairly obvious as to why, but I will further explain: There are very few reasons that have more than one account, and most of them entail trying to circumvent punishment due to violations of the rules. Don't do it, or you'll get banned (ALL of the account you have)

Hints for gaining respect on here or any forum By: Decoy

1) Be humble - Don't assume you know anything, or have to be the righteous hand of the mods until you are WELL vested into the community. For the knowing part, that means LISTENING and LEARNING from the environment long before you try to act better than those who make the environment. For the righteous part, being a VETERAN who has done something for the community and apart of said community for some time (i.e. more than 1-2 years)

2) Spelling/punctuation - A lot is said about a person by their writing. If you're 14 and you swear your mature enough to attend an 18+ event...saying 'but im mature ask ne1 they tell u' doesnt help your arguement. If I can't understand you, then you're stupid...or at least that is the ruling mentality.

3) Think before posting - Think about what you're trying to say before you hit "submit reply". How does my response make me look? Remember, every action you take has an effect. If you come on AO acting like an A-hole, you'll be treated like an A-hole. If you act like you're better than everyone else, then you might get treated like a second class citizen.

4) Content Value - Ask yourself, does my post add to the value of the discussion? If the answer is 'no', then guess what? You've probably irritated someone and wasted a bunch of people's time.

5) Content Length - Unless answering a direct question, your responses or contributions should be more than cheering or brain farts (i.e. completely usless material) and should be longer than two sentences.

6) Utilize YOUR knowledge - If something doesn't pertain to you, or you have little to no first hand knowledge then don't post. Talking about how to upgrade a gun based off of a 'friend of a friend's' situation doesn't make what you're saying right, although in some cases it might. Don't deal with absolutes unless it is proven as an absolute. Just because something doesn't work for you (like a retailer for instance) doesn't mean it won't work in someone else's case.

value of my post. Thought it was good info to the ppl like me that didnt know. Didnt see any rule about posting news, New or old, If there was one in others threads sorry, didnt read all of the forums yet.

Im new to airsoft and new to the AO, as u can see it was my 1st post. Thanks for the warm welcome. lol Didnt think it would cause problem in General.

There currently isn't a rule against it, which is why I posted something about the discussion of making it a rule.

It's fairly common for stuff like this to end up in the news. In fact, there isn't a week that goes by that something like this ISN'T in the news. Normal news isn't such a big deal, but stuff like this isn't normal news. The people that perpetuate these acts of stupidity don't play airsoft, likely don't have any formal gun safety training, and certainly don't read these forums. In fact, most of these people don't buy their guns from airsoft retailers, they usually buy them from chain stores (****'s, Walmart, Meijer, etc).

Normally posting news on forums isn't a huge deal either, except that on THESE forums, people try to start Crusades to inform the media that we aren't all idiots, which does nothing but draw more attention from the media (most of whom are very liberal and not very pro-gun, and by proxy, not very airsoft friendly anyway).

So to make this a bit easier to understand, I'm going to put this into a set of completely bogus mathematical formulas:

Formula one:
Educated airsofter (such as those found on AO) + Airsoft gun = No problems

Formula two-zero:
Idiot + airsoft gun = stupidy ensues, media does story

Educated airsofter watches news + posts news on forums = Forum aware

Educated (but threatened) airsofter + letter to media = Media now informed
that we are threatened by their stories (which in turn, makes them interested in pursuing further stories)

Media turns to searching airsoft sites, only to discover a plethora of data and threads discussing other "negative" incidents, media does story on "overwhelming" amount of negative incidents occurring.

Soccer mom watches media, initially ignores story. Soccer mom's idiot kid does something stupid with the airsoft gun that she bought him, she immediately blames the gun, starts writing to politicians to possibly ban airsoft guns. Etc, etc etc etc etc.

Some might think that this chain of events I've mapped out is a stretch, and I might have to agree with them. However, things like this have happened to other less fortunate hobbies and activities (look up "Lawn Darts").

If you people truly want to make a difference, learn the rules of gun safety and proper airsoft safety. Know them and breath them. They are your bible, and will shield you from trouble. Then go out and teach others, and have them teach others.

Posting stuff like this on forums biweekly helps nobody whatsoever. It simply creates panic and fear among the masses.

I apologize if I've offended you good sir, and I meant not to make you feel unwelcome. I've simply become a bit jaded in my "old age".

Hey don't worry about that. Three kids tried to pull some stunt with AirSoft guns and got into a bit of trouble with cops out here. Two of the kids were shot and are now in critical condition. All three were charged with a bunch of things in relationship to their little night of fun. So yea for dumb people doing dumb thing.

Please remember the following:
-Treat Airsoft (guns, replicas, toys, whatever) as if they were real weapons
--Never display in public
--Never point at others (unless at a proper field in the proper secion of the field)
--Treat the Airsoft weapon as if it was a loaded gun at all times
--NEVER fully trust a safety, the safety is there to help you but you are the final safety
--Transport as if it was a real weapon
--Be safe and have fun and inform people of the proper way to handle airsoft
---there are more things but these are just some of the simple basics

Also side not as being a member of the media:
When things happen we try to do some background checking on a subject. When you type in some topics about airsoft into search programs like google and yahoo you come to AirSoft Ohio forum pages. So when AirSoft makes the news it will get this page and others more traffic because news people are looking for stuff. I am not saying don't post just to keep that in mind.
Any questions about news media feel free to ask and I will do my best to respond. Please understand if my answer seems to be short or not "nice" it is because I am not going to lie about what really goes on in my head over your question. I get several people a day e-mailing/calling/faxing "story ideas" to me to review. I am nice to them but sometimes the ideas aren't the best or even news worthy. I do read over everything that comes across my desk and give it consideration. But even though it might be something BIG to you it might not mean anything to the viewers that I have to please. Not all assignment editors are as...."nice" as me so I will give my answer to any question as straight forward as I can.

We had some trouble in my neighborhood this Summer with a small gang of kids running around on their bicycles shooting other kids with airsoft guns. It died down before I had a chance to address it with our property management group. But next Spring when the weather warms up, I'm going to get with E.H. and Darkstar and see if we can hold a little 'airsoft education' meeting on behalf of the property management to get these kids set straight. Otherwise it is only going to get worse I believe.

The only thing airsofters as a community can do to combat ignorance and stupidity is through word of mouth education. I always make a point to tell people how real airsofters behave, and to let those in the conversation know that safety is the number one priority.

I helped a random woman buy airsoft supplies at wally's the other day, and I asked if her husband used goggles. She replied "No, he's an adult and doesn't think he has to wear them." I explained how dangerous that is even though his gun is a low powered springer. I asked her to please buy her husband goggles, because $3.00 is a small price to pay to protect his vision. She bought him goggles. And I made her promise to make him wear them.

This is the only way to let people know we are responsible adults, not idiotic children who act like fools because "It doesn't hurt."
