British military loadout

I've been inspired by my L86 to create a desert military loadout. My whole plan here is to see what the AO community has to say about this. I haven't seen a whole lot of British gear being thrown around here so I figured I'll be a pioneer for it. I'm also just a huge fan of DPM. My list of gear would be:

DPM Bdu's, a helmet similar to the MK.6 or MK.7, and for a vest, something similar to Osprey Body Armor (minus the armor plates).

My combat boots would suffice for the loadout until I acquire tan combat boots. All in all, I think its a good idea and a chance to be a bit different.

Here's my idea for it.

If anyone who has done this is out there, go ahead and let me know how it went. So far, I've got the L86 and I'm working on getting DPM.

The 91st Ohio uses British DDPMs and I think we are some of the only guys who wear the stuff. Only once and a while have we seen another player wearing both tops and bottoms, but most often people can't seem to find a whole set.

I've actually found a full set but I'm not sure if they are legitimate. I'm going to order them and find out. They are relativity cheap so I'm slightly concerned.

Just a warning to you about the helmet. They don't to my knowledge make replicas of either the MK6 or MK7, and they are very difficult to find in the right size. Those that you do fine will be pretty pricey. Also, if you want to find the netting cover, it's going to be pretty hard to find in the right size as well. I got a MK6 off of ebay, for about $100 if I recall, that had the wrong sized DPM cover. It took me a few months to find a DDPM cover in the right size.. So I hope the search goes a little smoother for you if you choose to go that route.

I found a helmet in Large. GS MK6 but it doesn't come with a cover.

If you would have thought on it sooner, Cheaper than Dirt had Osprey vests in desert DPM for a decent price...but I just looked and they are all gone.

However - I am sure they are still floating around. Check Ebay and other retailers. They do not have the plates so it will save your wallet (and save you from unneeded torture on the field.)

If you want to give up, you can always just give me your L86. I'll be glad to take it off your hands.

Good luck!

If you find the pants you are set to go, cause I found my Top easily. It took me a couple days of hardcore researching to find my Bottoms.

I love the idea of someone else doing an British Impression, if I can get a hold of an Osprey Vest I will be doing one too. For now stuck with MJK/Coyote "American" Stuff.

Spetsnaz- I was so mad when I seen they were out of stock, I missed it by a week.

I did some pics with Timnis a while ago with PANTAC Coyote over DPMs, hope it gives you some ideas.

Lastly, who likes DPMs and has two thumbs?
THIS GUY!

If you have questions or want some more Pictures for thought, send me a PM.

The 91st Ohio based ourselves off of the British SFSG(special forces support group) that does use a lot of American equipment. But they are also something of a mixture of all the British Commonwealth forces spread across the world, like Canadians and Aussies, and New Zealanders and such. I have seen some pics of guys wearing the bottoms with ACU tops and CIRAS equipment. I have also seen the bottoms with a chocolate chip top and IBA equipment, so it would seem pretty much anything can go with the DDPM bottoms..

The Sportsman's Guide sells some British stuff but you have to watch the sizing. Since they dumb down the sizes to S, M, L, XL and so forth and they don't give you a choice on length or inseam, you may end up with pants or a jacket that is too short or too long. I've been round and round with these guys and they won't listen to reason... I ordered a pair of large pants which are supposed to be a 38" waist but the ones I received were the equivalent to a 36. They aren't even following their own sizing...

The desert stuff I did receive though was brand new and very nice. New woodland DPM is harder to come by, especially the pants. With the switch over to MTP (Multi-Terrain-Pattern), it's just a matter of time before there's an influx of the old patterns to us civi's.

I think the British Desert DPMs are great alternative to the US 3 color desert. I'm trying to get my team switched over but we'll see...

The sportsman's guide is where I found a full set. It is a combat shirt and the pants. As for the Osprey vest, I saw them on Cheaper Than Dirt and was almost in tears when they said they were out of stock haha. I'll keep looking.

@Spetnaz: hahaha...no

I've got the desert DPM combat shirt and the pants. Haven't worn the shirt yet, but the pants absolutely rock. Breathe much better than US DCU and are much lighter weight. Quality is much higher too.

Also have a woodland DPM smock from the Falklands War. Awesome piece of kit, I love it.

Where I get my British kit

I have been collecting British kit for some time and here are a few of the places on ebay I use. They are in the UK so sometimes shipping is high but they will combine if you order more than one item. I am trying to post photos of my 3rd Para load out.

I have found that the Desert DPM pants are very, very thin. Torque do you believe they would hold up in the woods?
I know for a fact that thorns stick right through them. 6mm Militia toyed with the idea of switching to DDPM....still waiting on the team to purchase uniform. LOL

My pants are ridiculously thin, I have played in the dense areas of Red Dragon and it somehow protected me. I was kind of surprised on how well it held up, no rips or tears. Been caught on Thorns and Twigs, the pants have still not ripped. They remind me of Pajama pants...

@Jdavis: what type of vest is that? The one that is DPM and has the hydro carrier. It doesn't look like the Osprey.
@Merc and Phoenix: I have heard that they are very thin but the material is extremely durable as Phoenix has explained. I think it is a desert thing due to it being a tad hot in the desert.

Operational Waistcoat

It is a British Army Issue PLCE Operational Waistcoat (Assault Vest). The back of the vest is mesh and it has buckles for the Camelbak to attach. The pouches are permanently attached with lots of room. I have one in woodland DPM too and they are made the same and very sturdy.

True dat Merc, they are thinner. I'm assuming that the Brits really intended them for arid locations, so not much thorn in the desert I guess. They sure do breathe well.

So far I've run them for 2 games, and esp at Springfield I didn't seem to have any issues with the brush. Your mileage may vary however.

@jdavis: Nice gear photos!
