Greatest collectables in the history of man!!!

Ok,

Thursday, DMan, TheBleckFox, Ecotecracer and myself are browsing through a local Wally World. As we go past the posters we see one for the line of collectable figures "Homies".

Now, after browsing through the poster we were all in stiches finding a more and more hilarious Homie.

Now I did some searching thinking to myself, there is no way there can be real.

Well, I was wrong. Not only are they real, they are also a huge hit amongst the latin comunity in SoCal.

I figured I would post the site for everyone to have a good laugh, and possibly intrest them in the "Homies" line of collectables.

Site URL: http://www.homiesworld.com/characters/

Scroll down the page to find a list of the "Homies" Characters. There are a ton. And by clicking on the name, you get their backstory.

Some of my personal favorites...

Baby Mama :http://www.homiesworld.com/characters/details.aspx?id=8
Homie Pigeon :http://www.homiesworld.com/character...ils.aspx?id=71
Orange Vato :http://www.homiesworld.com/character...ls.aspx?id=108
Shorty :http://www.homiesworld.com/character...ls.aspx?id=150

I figure these would also make for some damn good avatars.

Yeah I've seen them out for quite some time now, I used to see them all of the time in those "Quarter machines"..... My brother must have had about 50 different ones for a while.... Some of them are very funny....

Wow...... I'm almost speechless.

There appears to be a figure for every Mexican/Hispanic/Latin/Tex-Mex stereotype you could possibly think of. Maybe I'd have to be a gang membe in southern California to get it, but I think if I saw one of my other homies playing with these "Homies", I'd probably have to shoot him.

I don't know what it is about these things, but they kind of strike me as being more than a bit derogatory.

I have seen things for years myself. I even knew somebody of Puerto Rican descent that loved them and encouraged his son to collect them as often as he could collect fifty cents for the machine. We even joked on how they might one day make a "homie" out of this guy and his son.

"Homies" made their debut while I was still living in southern California. They were originally sold in gumball machines and created quite a stir causing them to be pulled from stores. Strangely the controversy caused a huge demand for them.

FUnny. They've had these at Wal-Mart for years. I remember seeing one in the Oklahoma City Wal-Mart when I moved to Wisconsin in 2001.

I do have to admit, Orange Vato looks like Sidd.

They certainly represent a stereotyped South-Cali feel..but it's not really in a negative way...it's not like there's a gang-banger one or any with Mac-10s or anything...

They also make a Italian mob-styled series and a red-neck trailer trash series.

This is somewhat related, but just had to post it since we were on the topic.

Trooper, hate to inform you, but stereotyping, whether it be violent or not, is a negative practice. Of course some stereotypes are funny (like white trash stereotypes), but a lot of funny things tend to be negative in nature. Stereotyping is a form of racism, granted it is often a lighter one, but it is still racist.

Personally, I'm surprised the ACLU hasn't filed suit with the makers of homies yet

I think they're funny. If you can't find humor in politically incorrect trinkets that the people they would most likely offend are collecting then what can you laugh at anymore?

Yeah these things were all over Taco Bell's, Walmart's, and Bowling Alley's. In fact, my sister spent like $5 on them once.

We stereotype all the time...it's mainly based on an observation of a certain group (and by 'group' that goes way beyond seeing things in regards to race). The problem comes when people cant make a distinction that a stereotype refers to something that MANY people of that group have in common and ALL people in that group have in common. Stereotypes work and it's why they exist. Police officers, investigators, the military, psychiatrists use them all the time...because they work.

Let's say you went to Best Buy and wanted a game for a video game console...say Xbox 360. You walk in and the sales rep in the store asks " Is there anything I can help you find"?
You state that you are looking for a new game for your 360...what game do you think he is going to show you? Call of Duty 4...or Viva Piñata?

I dont know, Is it a stereotype to say that all stereotypes are negative? There are times when stereotypes of certain types are wrong, but ALL stereotypes aren't really wrong depending on what one considers a stereotype.

Regardless, as much as I would love to discuss this (and could).. I dont think this is where this thread was meant to go.

Thats a terrible example... what if they showed you Viva Pinata?

No, sterotypes are what they are. Yes, they are morally wrong when used in police enforcement and other things, but the stats speak for themselves. They really do work.

Dont forget who you are talking to. In OutputWorld everyone holds hands as they troll through their picturesqe landscape where they are no corporations, fossil fuels, drug interdiction laws, churches, and everyone votes for Al Gore.

Trooper it is only when you realise this that youll be able to make an argument that can get through to our boy Output.

Shoot, how do I get to OutputWorld? Sounds like a place too good to be true!

But more in regard to the greatest collectables in the history of man: Big Clips, I think you should combine your love for homies and your love for world domination games, and create an uber-game where homies attempt to take over the world!

Oh..thanks for the heads up...I have a minor in Sociology and LOVE discussing these sorts of things all day long...plus life teaches you quite a few things along the way.

I was just saying that not all stereotypes are bad...it's just that the word stereotype is such a buzzword that it sets people into political correctness mode. Many professions rely on stereotypes to identify personality archtypes and even to drive sales.

Regardless, I'm not about to get in an arguement over little plastic toys...not when there are real issues in the world. It wasnt my intention to set anyone off. Thanks for the advice Big Clips...I'll keep it mind when talking to Output.

Big Clips, you forgot about the outrageous taxes we enjoy in OutputWorld. Oh, and Al Gore won the election, he just hasn't been sworn in yet :P

And Trooper, stereotyping is a negative practice no matter how you look at it. Sure it has its applications in the world, but that does not make it morally or ethically right. When it comes to the Homies characters, there is definitely a lot of stereotyping. Racism and stereotyping can be funny (like with these toys), but that does not end the negativity.

For instance, Big Clips made some stereotyping comments about liberals. While said in good taste, if said around the wrong person, they could be misunderstood.

Personally, I love the homies, if for no other reason than because they are a publicly acceptable stereotype. If the Discovery Channel did a special on different types of Hispanics and showed real people playing the Homies roles, there would be huge public outcry. But somehow, Homies gets away with this, and that is why they are awesome

Output...I'm really not going to argue this any longer. I dont want to turn this into a hostile issue when Big Clips just wanted to make a simple post. It really is not worth debating this over plastic figurines. I cant even say I disagree with you completely, but I think there is much more to the subject than it being a black and white issue...so seldom are things that clear cut. Maybe one day, after a game, we can have a beer and discuss this in person where it is easier to express ideas without having it tainted by misleading undertones...you guys do have a beer or two after games, right?

If we could drink on the field, we would. Wait, haven't we?

Anyway, I'm not trying to get on your case or anything. I'm just trying to have a discussion. If you would like to continue our little conversation (which you said you enjoy earlier), please, feel free to PM me.
