How to Induce Stress?

So I wasn't sure whether this was an off topic or general? So I took a jab here and we will see what happens.

In terms of training, what ways are there to create stress in a drill? That is the basic questions I am looking for an answer to. I know time and surprise adds stress but I am looking for more like tasks to complete. Something where one must set down his weapon in the drill and complete this while under that stress of time and surprise. A really bad example is EOD, hate to use it but it's something to give you a reference.

Or if you know of other drills that add this element I'm all to hear about them. I've search resources I know and haven't found anything.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I like to throw in exercise elements. Say I'm practicing with my sidearm, I could do a sit up and while in the up position, draw and fire. or with a rifle, I could bring a dumbbell and do a set where I double tap, reload, double tap, and do a tricep extension. the workout induces stress over time, and shots get harder with muscle fatigue. if yo have access to enough space, you can run a lap of some size, shoot, reload, and do another lap. this does the same thing, but with cardio.

Do twenty push ups, have your rifle sitting a fair distance ahead of you, mag out, sprint to the rifle, put rifle in, fire your weapon.

D-Boy yells at us for our training for both airsoft and real steel. He actually shoves you and pushes you around. This is the best thing for me, as exercise stuff is okay for higher heart rate but having someone yell at you and push you around is a whole different ball game.

Usually getting yelled at and getting lots of random variables in your training does well. Once, we used a semi-horn to piss each other off. That, along with yelling personal lines, and making rude, obscene, distracting gestures works well.

Getting physical works well in a higher level atmosphere, after you start getting used to distractions with eyes, ears, and smell.

Just don't call your girlfriend, wife, or the other girl. That's too much stress for most to handle.

Getting stressed from a woman is the first sign of failure and mental breakdown

For weapon training:

1) Start shooting static at a target. Record your results.
2) Use same targets, perform moving fire drills and off balanced fire drills. ( IE. move to cover, fire at kneeling while bent to shoot under cover)
3) If you have other people at your disposal, have them fire blanks at you while conducting drills or throw some thunder-B's or fire-crackers near you unexpectedly while firing.
4) If you have other people at your disposal, have them stand in front on the target, shoot the target.
5) Record all results from the above drills
6) run at least a quarter mile in your gear and repeat the above drills, compare your results.

If you have someone who can throw some spit in your face and yell at you while conducting the drills as well, that is also a great option.

Inducing stress, if done properly, can be a great tool. However it's very easy to not get the desired results you're looking for if you don't have the right mindset / people involved with the right mindset.

There's a big difference between inducing stress, and inducing fatigue. It sounds like you're looking more for ways to induce fatigue. Inducing stress, for an extreme example, would be having someone cattle-prod you for every shot missed or not within the kill zone.

Thanks for all the great replies guys. Finding some new things to throw in, really helpful!

Sparky, I know all to well what you mean about the people with the wrong mindset.

While I am looking at fatigue, I do want stress. I want the simple tasks of reloading, drawing, holstering, and other tasks to be come difficult not only because of being physically tired but being stressed by your cattle-prod example. So I am looking for that stress.

For stress have any MTI (Drill instructor) teach you how to tie your shoes. You'd be surprised how wrong you've been doing it all these years.

Stress shooting is simple. Exercise and then try to shoot with a high heart rate. Inducing human factors artificially is very possible with what people already listed. It is important that the people around you are comfortable with it and its executed in a controlled environment. Physical contact during shooting can create a very unsafe situation if its not done correctly. When you play airsoft, you are pretty much placing yourself in a stress shoot.

As for that video, there's a lot of good points, but also a lot of advanced techniques and some exhibition style shooting that isn't really practical. Upside down and mirror stuff probably won't be the most common events.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qzATF8R1XE

That video has been around for a while. Granted VERY dangerous, its much simpler and inducing the human factors in order to inoculate the stresses. You need to build up to this level. I don't advocate shooting rounds into the dirt at the proximity due to ricochet factors.

The only thing i can think of is having some sort of punishment. IE if you cant do the drill in this amount of time you have to run a distance. 400 meters is probably good for that because it is tiring but not to long. That and the aforementioned yelling and pushing should make it pretty stressful. That is my thoughts at least not really an expert.

The easiest way to induce stress is to get a phonecall from your girlfriend that she is late. Was sweatin' buckets...
