Ticks?

Has anyone had any problems with ticks while playing airsoft in Ohio?

According to this page deer ticks (the lyme disease ones) are most active in the spring and the fall.

They are tiny though.

Recommendations I am seeing are to use DEET or bedbug repellant on your clothes, tuck pants into boots, sterilize your clothes immediately after the game (long hot dryer cycle), and check yourself over and remove ticks immediately after the game. Apparently lyme disease transmission chances go up quite a bit after 24 hours.

Contrary to urban myth, I'm reading that the best removal method is to pluck them with tweezers but to do your best to get the head. Apparently the methods that encourage the tick to leave on its own (flame, for example) tend to cause the tick to regurgitate and can increase the chances of lyme disease transmission. That's what I'm seeing anyway ... I'm not an expert, so double check what I'm telling you to be satisfied with your own research on it.

Anyway, I was wondering if people are actually finding ticks on them after airsofting around here?

Yes, everyone's had problems with ticks- it's inevitable given our environment. The best way to combat them is 100% deet and checking, as you said. I've heard many different ways to remove them. I'm a soon-to-be-eagle scout myself, and from my experiences there's no right or wrong way, so long as you don't distress the tick too much so that he, as you said, regurgitates. Most of the time, though, I catch them before they stick their heads in.

Checking around some more, here's another good site: tickinfo.com.

And this repellent (permethrin) seems to perform extremely well. What's nice about this stuff is you can spray it on your uniform and it remains effective for several weeks.

While safe for humans, permethrin is apparently dangerous for fish and cats, however, so beware if you have such pets or live near fish habitats where your wash water might get into the ground water.

Had one once when I had long hair. Dead center of my head. Needless to say, I no longer have long hair.

Anyway, as far as I have ever done, I just pluck the little suckers (no pun intended) off my skin. Never heard of them regurgitating, that's interesting/kinda gross.

Awkward short story time!!!
One time when I was a kid, I had a tick stuck in the top of my crack... I had to lay over my mom's bed while she pulled it out... Super awkward.

*Knock on wood* I've never had any problems with ticks. I always wear a beanie, helmet, t-shirt under my blouse, bottoms fully bloused and two layers of socks. There is no where for them to get in on me. Do what I do and you'll be fine... Just my .6 Ruble

One more Eagle Scout checking in.
Be careful if you use a flame on a tick. I heard somebody say they accidentally burnt the legs off a tick. The tick was still down in the hole and bit down. The person had a hard time getting it out after that.

Ive been airsofting for 5 years now and have NEVER once had a tick on me either while airsofting or after. I grew up outdoors, so i know checking like crazy is a must, and if im out in the woods with just jeans/tshirt on, i almost always find a tick or two but so far, being loaded up with all this gear makes a difference. I always wear gloves and tuck my pants into my boots so it seems to work. Doesn't stop me from checking every time though because lyme disease suuuuuucks.

I've also heard that kerosene dripped over them will suffocate them rather quickly. Never tried it though. Not sure how- the explanation is that it 'dissolves' their respiratory system like if you spray a wasp or hornet with Brakleen or Raid. I don't recommend trying this in conjunction with the match trick

Another Eagle scout, I have had ticks on me before, and the best mention of getting them out is with a knife (in my opinion) if you have another person with you. I had a guy on one of my trips get a tick out of me one time with a Ka Bar knife.

Lyme has over 350 Symptoms and can be found in Fleas, Mosquitoes, Gnats, Biting flies... The test to find it is Really 60 % accurate and if you have ever been bit it may take years for symptoms to show up..... this is where to get the test 100% accurate. www.spirostat.com can test for 70+ strains of Spirochetes. DO NOT USE 100% DEET WHILE AIRSOFTING

You will most likely damage your AEG

Deet is extremely corrosive to plastics and will latterly dissolve and eat away plastic VERY fast. So if you cover yourself in a bug spray that has a high deet content, I can guarantee that it will make its way onto your gun. I have personally ruined an MP5 lower from this and I know several other people that have ruined AEG's from it as well.

Just google it and you will see what I'm saying.

Otherwise grab some 100% Deet, spray it on your hand, then grab AEG pistol grip (assuming it's plastic) and you will have a sweet custom pistol grip that is molded to your hand.

I don't want to go off topic on this thread, just don't use 100% Deet and you'll be fine.

That sounds very much on topic Grease, thanks for alerting us to this danger.

The more I hear, the more Permethrin sounds like the ideal way to deal with ticks in Airsoft. (See the sources I linked to near the top of this thread.)

DEET seems to have some known toxicities with humans while (at least for now) Permethrin appears to be safer and yet longer lasting ... Best practice is to spray it on your clothes, apparently, as it quickly breaks down in contact with your skin. But on your clothes it's supposed to last for several weeks.
