vehicle interest?

what would be the interest in me building a tank, 8x8, like the Stryker mobile gun platform, for under $1000?
and yes, i am 90% done with the plans and building method. my dad is a contractor so i know my way around power tools and the such.

I've spent a lot of time working out theories for this sort of thing, and haven't come up with a way to do it for anywhere near that cheap -- Out of curiosity, what are you planning to use for drive mechanics to get 8x8 drive?

I would be very interested, but you hafta build it first.

The main thing I would want to see is your turret setup.

I'd like to see it also. Big difference between "plans" and actually building it. It took me 2 years and $20k to build my 6x6 version on a tank. Good luck.

was the $20k including the argocat? i found a cheaper version I can build for abo $300-400 also my thoughts on this have been proceeding for about two years now.
variations before this one:

-sherman tank
-ripsaw
-halftrack
-DPV (at this point i gave up on tracks and went with the sandrail, it was to much $$$)
-this one

this, albeit extremely modified. extra wheel (non drive), wood body that has been possibly fiberglassed over, small gun turret, 8 personnel capacity excluding crew of 4-5 (3 to operate)

AND made of wood? Have you considered how EXTREMELY heavy that is going to be when you did your calculations? Cost/time/weight add up very quickly. Something that size is going to require more than a lawnmower engine. I had to upgrade to a 20HP engine with special clutches and my AAV is STILL underpowered. Like I said before, good luck, and lets see some pictures during the build phase.

PS: I have plans for a airsoft APC based on an Argo 8x8 in my head, but doubt it will ever be built, unless someone else wants to bankroll the project. One major airsoft vehicle in the garage is enough. lol.

Blizzard, team vehicle was atleast 10k and hundreds of man hours, and we didn't even have to build the drivetrain. Good luck is all I have to say about that.

Ouch. I didn't spend 20K on my real-world armored vehicles.

Just to point out a few (mostly wheeled ones for less that 20k)

-Ferrets are wicked fun... ever go to Wendy's in an Armored Vehicle that's road legal?
-BRDM 1 and 2 are bigger and for not so many 100s of man hours would look and work well.
-BTRs in their various versions are really just armored trucks, but don't tell that to them.

Wooden "tanks" are just like cardboard "tanks" and plastic "tanks" and paintball netting "tanks" .... most notably they are NOT tanks. Nor do they tend to very mobile or sturdy.

I know the feeling (I was young once) and have made some pretty weird stuff to mimic armored things. Now that I own actual vehicles I wonder why I didn't do it sooner.
The amount of energy to build something in your garage is not much more than it is to rebuild some retired military vehicle. The difference is what you have when you are done.

Scary enough the cost is about the same too. Hardlock built a pretty impressive vehicle and it only cost him thousands of dollars and thousands of hours in design and fabrication. Now that he is done it is only of value to him and a few people who play airsoft or paintball. I know a guy selling a Mark 2 Ferret right now, that would drive anywhere you want to go, intimidate people, and it already has an airsoft M240 (FN Mag for you British chaps) mounted in the turret.

All that said, this is just my opinion, given free on the internet. So take it for what it is worth to you!

Stagg, You are correct in that my "tank" only has value to me, but there are 3 reasons I built it from scratch rather than buy a "real" military vehicle:
1. It was a challenge and I wanted to prove I could do it. Did I go overboard? YES, but I built it to fulfill a vision I had in my head. I built the whole thing without a single written set of plans or drawings.
2. The whole project started as a way for my girlfriend, Shannon, to play airsoft WITH me. She was 5'1" and 95lbs. Most gear was too big and/or heavy for her. The initial design was tailored to her. Unfortunately, 6 months into the build, she committed suicide. I spent the next year and a half finishing the project as a tribute to her.
3. My Dad was a tanker. He was the "driver" for the M47 while in the Army. The "A26" number on the rear of my turret was his unit number in the 8th Armored Cav.

For obvious reasons, MY vehicle means a lot to ME. I hope you guys enjoy (when I bring it out) lol

I'm not knocking it at all.
Following your build, via pictures has left nothing but a good impression.

Did you go overboard? Nope. In my experience the attitude of "good enough" is what brings out the plywood covered golf carts.

For the other people looking to make something, don't go into it with blind enthusiasm. Know what you are getting into, but I have found it highly rewarding to build and rebuild vehicles. Its worth it... especially if it has a mini-gun.

never could get my hands on a ferret, the gas is to much $$ and I can't find one online.

would love to see it. how much are you thinking? I couldn't nail down an argo for less than a thousand bucks.

hardluck, to answer your question about power, i have no reason to put a maximum capacity of troops in there-they would basically have to all be standing up, and should that ever happen, I have enough engine compartment stored out for a V6, possibly a V8. it's also not going to be wood. that was a typo. I was thinking about a few options: fiberglassing the whole thing, fiberglass panels glassed together, or just sheet metal.

Will never happen for the budget you have listed. Especially to be allowed on most reputable fields as they have to mimic real life military or contractor vehicles. Either up the budget or forget it. Fiberglass alone with tools and resin will cost you a grand.

How about using Coroplast for the vehicle shell? I've heard it's a ghetto way to make fairings for human-powered vehicles (HPV): http://www.recumbents.com/wisil/pauljones/ Coroplast is a lightweight (hollow structure), non-toxic, waterproof, shockproof, long lifespan, corrosion preventive material.

Figure 1: Coroplast covered HPV

Figure 2: Fiberglass covered HPV (Aerorider - the toy I dreamed about)

I would say I have about $1500 into it not adding labor hours, I got a killer deal on the drivetrain that helped a lot.

UPDATE!
a friend of mine involved in my BS troop has suggested that i rip out the guts of a zero turn motor, and use that as the drivetrain.
comments/suggestions/opinions?
