Real Steel compatibility?

My father's birthday is coming rather soon and he has been telling me that he wants a collapsible stock for his AR-15. Now, I am only a 14 year old paperboy, so I can't exactly "go for broke" on this. I was wondering is something for air soft would work with his Real Steel? I am almost completely positive that the MagPul MOE would work, but yet again I can't afford much.
I was recently at the Sharonville gun show with my father and I saw many of the vendors selling UTG/Leapers parts with their Real Steel guns. I really want to get my dad something that will make him want to find another range so we can go shooting together again, and this might just be it. So any input on this is very welcome. Also, if you know of a rifle range near Cincinnati, Ohio that we could go to, the name/website would be appreciated. Thanks for any and all help!

The short answer is no

Does he currently have a full stock? If so it will definately not work. Airsoft and real stock tubes attach in a completely different way. He will need a new extension tube to change from full to collapseable.

I know airsoft M4 type stocks will not fit on real steel commercial tubes, I tried it for s&gs. The airsoft stock is too small to fit over the tube. Mil-spec extension tubes are a different size than commercial tubes. I believe they are slightly smaller. I don't know if that would work or not.

Anyone ever tried to put an airsoft stock on an RS mil-spec tube?

Maybe you could talk to your mom or siblings and go in on it together?

I just put a EMoD stock on my AR carbine, so I have an extra M4 stock I'll sell cheap. Like I said, if he has a full stock you will still need a new tube, spring and buffer also. It is a commercial spec stock.

I'll get back to you with a website for a local club. If your interested in my M4 stock, PM me.

This is the club I am a member of
http://www.miamirifle-pistol.org/

One more thing, if his rifle has a 20" barrel, it's not a good idea to put a carbine length tube on it. It will work, but is harder on the gun because it doesn't have enough length to let the rifle recoil properly.

Yes it has a full stock on it. The only other thing I know about the gun is that he bought it after the "Flash Hider Ban". In saying that air soft items will not work, does anyone have any recommended websites, or local stores I can visit to buy a stock that won't break the bank? As of now I only have about $100. Just a normal LE stock will do, nothing fancy, especially since he is a police officer, I would assume he has the most experience with those (if that even matters).

Magpul

If you want to impress him with something practical for his AR, go Magpul. My advice would be to stay clear of the UTG and Leepers stuff. In the real steel world, they are on crap side of quality. DogTags has a link there to Magpul's website. Go there and browse. MOE and the CTR are in your stated budget. I would say the hardest decision you have to make is what color you want to get him.

My $0.02

Edit: P.S.

Just saw you stated he was a cop. I am a cop. So if you go with the Magpul and he doesn't like it, blame it on me. Also, your a good kid. Your dad will love whatever you get him.

Are you talking about the stock by it self or are you talking about a whole stock, including the buffer, buffer tube, and buffer spring? If your talking about a complete stock with buffer mechanism then only a gas blowback M4 stock would fit.

I know this guy he is local to the east side of Cincy. He may not be the best priced around but if its tactical he has it.

Also I got my mil-spec stock and tube set for around $40 at the Sharonville gun show.

No offense, but airsoft parts don't belong on a real rifle. Especially a critical piece like the stock.

That being said, I agree with the rest. If it's a full stock gun I could say two things:

Buy him the MOE stock. Might push him to get the rest of the parts easily. (As with my father, I buy him something and he finds all sorts of fun projects for it. The most recent example was a nail gun.)

Or if you can afford it, get him the stock & buffer tubes / springs, etc.

Another idea, if you want to get him something tactical but don't know what, get him a giftcard from like... here: http://www.skdtac.com/Articles.asp?ID=19

SKD is where I buy most of my gear / parts from... always competitively priced, wide selection.

I am talking full stock, the whole shabang. I might take maglips up on his deal for just the stock, but I need to figure out how much the Buffer, Spring, etc will be. I might also go with MagPul MOE, but does it come with the whole assembly, or once again just the stock itself?

Honestly, pick an online retailer and add up prices with shipping. Cheaper than Dirt, Combat Stocks, US Cav. You're only looking for thrree of the most commonly available components out there. Keep in mind that the actual stock may be better off spending more on it. A cheap telestock may have poor quality stock pins that break restuling in loss of cheek weld or a nasty pinch.

A buddy of mine put a Tokyo Marui collapsable stock onto his Bushmaster M4 a few years ago. He ONLY used the actual plastic part of the stock, not the actual buffer tube. His gun had an existing buffer tube, and as far as I know it's still working fine.

I've also heard a few people say some bad things about Leapers/UTG products. I've sold Leapers/UTG products for years, and though there have been a few products from Leapers that have been of poor quality in the past, they've got a lot to improve their products, and much of their new UTG products are not only great, but they're also priced to be more affordable. Now if you're going for high end quality, you'll hear no argument that Magpul is indeed among the best, but don't discount Leapers/UTG so quickly. There are far worse companies out there.

Thank you all for the help with my present for my father, even though it isn't a much of a surprise anymore. It's just kind of "I'm getting this for you, do you want it?". Anyway, I will be taking up maglips on his offer. So no more needed to be known about stocks. However, now we need a new rifle range to shoot this at. So, once again, if anybody knows a place we can go near Cincinnati the name/website would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again - Sam

It's going to break you budget of $100, but that is what I would go with. From experience, Bravo Company USA has some of the best AR15 parts on the market in terms of quality. If worse comes to worse, at least get him the Magpul MOE stock. It will kind of force him to buy the rest of the hardware.
