Noob Mistakes

Please chime in with anything I've missed. Thanks!

Here is a short list of common ‘noob’ mistakes made in Airsoft. It is by no means complete and while these are listed as ‘noob’ mistakes I see veterans making them as well. I make them. Some of these may be repetitive, that is because most people don’t always pick up on things the first time. Not you of course

• Not maintaining 360 degree awareness. You should always be looking around you and avoiding tunnel vision.

• Firing on a target that is out of range and unaware of you. This just gives away your position. It is interesting to note that most Veterans have longer ranged weapons so while they might be out of YOUR range that doesn’t mean you are out of theirs and you just made you affiliation, location and awareness known to the enemy.

• Using trails and other methods of easy travel. Veterans do this too, it means you are too lazy in most cases. In other cases it means speed is more important than getting ambushed and wiped out.

• Tunnel Vision. Not maintaining 360 degree awareness and watching to your sides and behind you.

• Lack of aggression. You aren’t going to shoot anyone hiding behind a tree. If you aren’t going to do anything the enemy is and you can rest assured that psycho does not have your best interests at heart. It is better to try and fail than to not try.

• Use cover and concealment at all times. When you are running at an enemy it is more effective to keep a large tree, hill or something solid between you and them while you get closer for a better shot.

• Don’t be afraid to retreat and try a different approach. The reality is that stalemates happen and both teams can get involved in a grueling slugfest that accomplishes nothing. Like the trench warfare of World War 1 this leads to high casualties, lack of tangible results and lots of pain.

• Do not fire while moving. It can be done but not without a lot of practice. You will always be more accurate firing from a stationary position. Also when you fire while moving you advertise your position, slow down your movement and very rarely are behind cover and concealment, which means you make a nice slow target while your fire is not likely to be effective.

• Spray and Pray is for the movies. Yes, weapons are automatic but small short bursts are more effective than using a BB hose unless you have a SAW and LOTS of ammo in your magazine. The Spray and Pray method also makes it much easier to locate you, it depletes your magazines faster and will leave you reloading at the wrong time.

• Teamwork is essential. Talk with your teammates to see what is going on and how you can contribute.

• Spend about 1/3 to ¼ (or better yet ½) of your time watching your team mates so you can keep track of where they are going, looking and doing so you can watch another direction and don’t get separated.

• Keep your distance. Clustering together in a small group makes a very tempting target for some psycho with an automatic weapon and an itchy trigger finger. His chances to get all of you increase dramatically the closer you are.

• Attack! Do not hunker down behind something solid and wait for someone to order you around. Nobody ever won the Medal of Honor hiding behind a tree. You won’t ‘get inside the enemy OODA Loop’ sitting still.

• Maintain a covered and concealed line of retreat when possible. It is one thing to know how to get into a tight spot, it is the mark of a professional to know how to get out of one.

• Doing something is ALWAYS better than doing nothing. When you do nothing you cede initiative, tactics and the chance of victory to the enemy.

• Being skilled in "Call of Duty" or "Modern Warfare" or any other video game does not mean you are skilled in airsoft. Tactics used in video games rarely apply in Airsoft.

• Don't be afraid to ask questions and make suggestions. The only real stupid question is the one you don't ask and making suggestions goes back to not taking any action. The best way to 'make a suggestion' is to phrase it in a question, for instance. "Do you want me and my buddy to flank them on the right?". You can't learn if you don't communicate.

• The mission is more important than the body count. So many people are obsessed with shooting people and don't bother to learn or pursue the objective. Sometimes it really is better to avoid shooting at the enemy and letting them by you than to open fire and get into a big firefight which will keep you from your real objective

• Following Orders is crucial for a team victory. If you aren't a team player go play COD or MW, you won't be popular on the airsoft field. Valuable players are the ones who accomplish the mission and take care of their team mates. If you like playing solo maybe you should change your callsign to BB bait. Annoying newbies get "special" (aka 'short bus') missions that get them out of the way while others get the job done.

• GOGGLES ON - always, the only exception is on those exteremely rare occasions when a clearly defined Ref says it is okay to take them off and everyone has removed their magazines and put their weapons on safe. There are no excuses for taking off your goggles on the field, none, period. Don't become known as the one-eyed noob.

• When exiting the field remove your magazine and shoot the weapon a couple times into a safe area. Don't be the moron standing around the staging area with a magazine in your weapon. Safety is important.

• Dress appropriately. I've seen people show up wearing shorts. I've never seen the idiot finish the day wearing shorts. Good boots are crucial to avoiding a sprained ankle.

• If you have a plan make sure you communicate to your buddies. If they aren't expecting you somewhere don't be surprised when they demonstrate how fast they can saturate you with a massive volume of high speed BB's.

• Prepare the night before. Make sure all your gear is ready and in working condition.

• Unless you have something important to say don't talk. Talking draws fire. If you talk to much about irrelevant stuff (like "how we are running like they do in MW") you will draw friendly fire (probably lots of it!).

• Don't zig zag. You are just as likely to get shot by a friendly as an enemy. Zig zagging only works at longer ranges with real weapons and when someone is aiming. Automatic weapons chase you and in airsoft when you zig-zag you are just slowing yourself down when you should be trying to get from piece of cover A to piece of cover B as quickly as possible.

• Not taking and drinking enough water. You can be a heat casualty without collapsing.

• A radio is good to have but do NOT transmit unless you have something relevant to the mission to say. Don't tie up the channels with stupid chatter, be professional.

Guilty as charged on Tunnel Vision and Spray and Pray. Usually it's the former that gets me hit.

You missed one very big one.

FOLLOW ORDERS!

When you have command structure, you need to follow commands instead of just being out there for YOU and YOUR KILLS. A good commander will rotate his people as needed, but becoming a good commander also comes from people following his orders.

You mean to tell me that my high rank in COD can't give me awesome Rambo skills on the field???? LAME!

If you tell a team mate your going to go with another guy in the brush to set up an ambush point, don't fire on them when you "hear a little noise".

Oh, and if you tell a team mate that we're walking into a head on fire fight, don't shoot the other way.

Following orders and objectives. These are the two I can't stress enough to the newer guys at our Open plays. Each time I'm in a leadership position I try to make it a huge point to listen to FTLs, SLs, XO and CO, etc. And that just because you could've nuked the other team because you had an amazing 25 killstreak doesn't mean we just accomplished an objective. Objectives first. Kills are secondary. Of course, 99.99999% of the time you will need to kill to do an objective, so why mix up the order and go for the kills first? But...I guess these things just come with time...
"I just went like 30 and 3!"
"Cool story bro, I just accomplished 3 objectives."

Noobs under my command who refuse to follow orders get a "Special Mission" charging into the enemy SAW gunners.

On the technical side, to make an event run smoothly

Square your gear away the night before. Load mags, check weapons and check batteries before you jump into Dad's tahoe off to Springfield, Valley Creek and Red Dragon. Get your new weapons chronoed at a local store, or save up and buy a chrono. Go google search surplus store so you can get some cheap matching BDU/DCU. This is only the beginning.

Very important thing here...i hate when people are asking me or my team mates to barrow batteries or guns because they forgot theirs or didnt prepare the night before.

Not so important on the field, but very important off:

Make sure your magazines are out of your guns when you are in goggles off areas. Staging, Outside of Chrono and everywhere else people have goggles off you should not have your magazine in your gun, regardless if there is a battery in your gun or not

Keep your goggles on when you're in the field, whether the game has started or not. Even if you're in between games and everyone's mags are out and safeties on, keep your eyes covered.
Footwear is important too. Combat boots aren't the same as work boots.

Someone needed to say it, thanks Warcat for doing it for us!

Irrelevant and unnecessary talking is one of my major pet peeves when trying to ambush a position. Major props on this post.

I hate it when I see new people not wanting to advance/shoot/move because "the enemy is shooting at them." What do you expect them to do, play on a Game Boy while you dash from cover to cover? No. If you think this, *sigh*, just quit now while you only have a 30 dollar pump shotgun. Now, if a SAW gunner has you pinned down, that's one thing, but when one guy targets you and scares you into hiding, that's not good. I see this sometimes too, when you run to get a better firing position, pull a buddy back to a medic, help complete an objective, what have you, DON'T TURN BACK. Don't go a third of the way to your destination, say "Oh, they are shooting me", and run back. You won't make it most of the time and you just moved further away from your goal. Once you start, don't stop 'til you're on the other side.

Why Not?

My X Series on a Lipo shoots 26 RPS. It's all about trigger control young grass hopper. I rarely use Full Auto unless I need to suppress fire.

It is all about fire superiority, isn't it? Put more rounds downrange than what the enemy can return.

Incoming rounds have priority of out going rounds.

This is one you forgot (although in all likelyhood 90% of the noobs will never read this), SHUT THE HELL UP! What I mean by this is if someone says noise discipline, the only thing out of your mouth should be CONTACT LEFT/RIGHT! and even this is when you are being fired upon or about to walk into an ambush. When you are on patrol, be as quite as possible, it easier to hear someone then see them sometimes. The element of surprise is one of the most valuable resources in military operations and because you just asked me what iz the BEstestest gun, we all die! Its just frustrating and most importantly, preventable.

Now, when the enemy is making a push on a bunker and they know you are there, THATS WHEN YOU YELL! If they are sneaking up on you, let your team know QUIETLY! Unless they are too close and you only have the option to fire. Also, when you get hit, call it out LOUD! It lets your team know when they lost someone, so that they know their flank has been compromised and the enemy doesnt waltz up and say SAFETY KILL!

This is true. In any situation gaining fire superiority is the primary interest. But without accurate fire its pretty much useless as there is no fear in suppression in airsoft.

This is why everyone in my team knows the military hand signs...BUT if we're in a fire fight, then we yell because our position has been found and no point being quiet.

EXACTLY! My team doesnt know all of them by any stretch of the imagination, but we know and USE the basics.

I'm still technically a newb, but the one thing I've noticed is that people on in CQB always have to do that "poke" around the corner. You know, the "I'll poke one eye out to see if I'm in the clear."
Then they wait for an hour.

Or when you Bang Bang someone, SHOUT IT! If it's the middle of the night, and someone is rushing you, fire at them. If you're behind someone, SHOUT BANG BANG. Don't whisper it.
