when an airsoft ohio user has been around for since 2003, it is kinda' weird seeing "New Member" under that user's name simply because he/she hasn't posted 100 times. why not make it so that a user has their status updated to "Member" at either 100 posts or 1 year of membership?

I like the idea, but if it were me I would go with six months. Also you have to log in and at least post once every month. You must remember that there are people that just sign up and only post if they need something.

No offense, but maybe you need to actually see what it is first, before complaining about it.

For future references:

0-99 posts: New Member
100-999 posts: Member
1000+ posts: Senior Memeber (I am currently the only person to have that, with out a special title..)

Then of course, we can always assign special ranks.

This just goes back to the saying on the old forums - Rank Doesn't Mean **** - apart from how much you post.

I've known people who posted 2400+ on a forums. Many of thier posts were just dumbass comments. Then you have the guys with less than 50 who are damn-near experts in the field. Post count doesn't mean anything.

If you are offended at being labelled a "New Member" based on your post count, then perhaps you should request a special rank. Otherwise, like most other features on this site, educate yourself and it won't be such a big deal.

if time and post count dont matter, then what should cause a member to go from "New Member" to "Member"?

Blood sacrifice.

lol, **** I've been on AO since 2001 and I'm less than 200 posts thanks to the constant revisions to this site, I consider myself part of the original era of AO, or close to that, but I don't have jack of a post count.

So I agree with texx regarding his views on the 'status'.

Changing the system to accomodate for time of membership would require Admin to make specific changes to the site software and/or purchase a specific add-on.

In order for that feature to be implemented, you would need to convince a majority of members that it is needed. Or more to the point, you would need to convince the site owner that such a feature is necessary.

Not that I believe that either case was impossible, it seems unlikely that any of the other members feel it is that important a feature to warrant changes to the site software.

Personally, as much time as I've spent modding and "membering" on AO, I don't see much of a point in "fixing" something that isn't needed. Kinda like installing a ceiling fan in a refrigerator. Yeah, it may very well circulate air to help keep your food colder, but installing a ceiling fan in a fridge is just crazy.

If you are really that serious about becoming a "member" on AO, get your post count up in a way that contributes information to the community. I mean, jeez, in one month you were able to get 45 posts. In the additional 2 months it would take you to get those additional posts, you can decide whether or not it is worth your time to do what is necessary to get your post count up that high.

honestly texx, im not worried about what my status is (i know with the way i post, ill be a senior member in no time ;) ).

since you do so much modding, you must realize how easy this change would be - compared to the work you have been doing for the store review section, this would be nothing. im not trying to get an overwhelming majority of the users here to petition for a change in the ranking system. im just offering a small suggestion to see what people think. maybe a lot of people will think it is a good idea, maybe not. airsoft ohio is a community, and as a member of that community, i am just trying to do my part and better my community. isnt that what neighbors are supposed to do? :D

sorry if you feel like im wasting your time,
steve

Unfortunately, I understand all too well. These changes would require additions to the site software either by buying the needed add-on, activating a feature, or by sifting through lines of code and modding the code. In order for changes to the softwatre to be made, you would need to convince Wallace the changes were necessary.

You would need to convice Admin that he should activate a feature that gives members a "special title" based on how long they have been posting on the boards.

You would have to convince Admin and Wallace that the current method of assigning "rank" is insufficient and that changes should be made.

And yes, I understand you are trying to help out the community in much the same fashion as your previous thread "Time Saver." Please go right on making suggestions. Many of us have already explained things to you about how "rank" is currently assigned. You clearly feel this is a very important issue.

I am certainly not trying to discourage you from making suggestions that you feel will make the community a better place. Despite the fact that content is what most people come here for, I'm sure assigning them a rank/status will further enhance that experience.

i do agree that seeing people that have been using the forums for a while should have some other status. maybe a 6 month period and they get "member". but if its difficult im not going to get my panties in a knot cause of it.

disregard that...

Having it change after a year, 6 months x amount of days IS hard because the current system does not really keep track of that.

Where, a normal PHP system IS set up to keep track of post count and count that. Right now there are only 3 settings, besides a custom one. (Which you only get 1. If your a mod. 2. If you do something REALLY stupid.) New member, Member, Senior Member.

As I discribed above, with those post counts above. What I *Don't* get is why people are upset about what it says next to their name. I mean, if you post something useful, that should be good enough. If you post stupid stuff, or wrong stuff, then your going to get ripped on and flamed - which will leave a bad enough reputation along with you for most members to learn just to ignore what you say.

Now, how about instead of continueing to post on these subjects, of changing the forums software wise, or whatever. How about changing the forums on the way that EVERY member has the power to: Researching, and correctly answering questions instead of just going off and giving a half assed answer, that the majority of the time I read, and it's either Wrong, or it's not answering the question.

I see that, as a bigger problem then your member status.

while some of my posts arent exactly deserving of the title "ingenious," i would like to think that most are at least "thoughtful" and/or "useful."

hahaha you're technically hijacking this thread.

Oh the irony.....

It's not irony, more along the lines of being superfluous than ironic.

Irony would berettaman being put in charge of re-writing the Newbie FAQ. Or making "evil" the AO Welcoming Committee.

Irony means something unexpected that would be the the exact opposite of the norm. You know, like Cybergun suddenly deciding to drop all lawsuits and offer retailers free products to sell Cybergun stuff.

It would be ironic if Loki shaved his head and began practicing Hinduism. It's ironic because Loki is known for his lovely locks of curlie blond hair and his determined enjoyment of killing things.

loki? curly blonde? perhaps you've mistakened him for goldilocks (easy to do). however, yes, greaseman, you're still clinging to alaniss morisette's 'ironic'...

also, i wouldn't say, 'superfluous,' either. more like he was expressing himself to his fullest within his label's limits.

anyway, back to the topic-

perhaps a way to schnazz up the site would be to instead of write, "new member" or "old member" put some sort of alternative term. ie: small fry, veteran, and dinosaur. or something equally as fluffybunnycute. (haha. joke.)

It's Ironic that you say Loki has curly blond hair.

But, maybe that's all part of his secret identity as a Hindu assassin... :)
