View Full Version : Health and Safety Thread?
With the recent post about Lyme Disease, and all the news around Ohio (local to us) with West Nile Disease spreading, along with main saftey concerns (FPS issues maybe? or How proper gear can keep you safe from hazards that aren't always airsoft? [I.e. Proper boots]). I thought it would be an idea to have a entire section/thread what ever, devoted to health and safety of airsoft players in general. I know it wouldn't be very popular posting wise, but it would be good information source on how to safely play, or any thing else that involves out doors, CQB, etc. (Hiking to exploring old buildings in the woods?)
Just an idea.. give me your thoughts.
Cheers

definitely a good idea. i had to kill a copperhead in the woods this afternoon with my mk1. i didnt know how else to deal with it and a safety forum would probably fix that problem. good idea foxtrot.

Um, you could have always just kept away from it and not killed a living animal just cause you wanted to play airsoft there. Im no animal activist but come on.

actually, we are building a house and i went out to work on it with my dad. my dad turned over a board and yelled "get your gun!" i got my gun and he told me to shoot the snake. it was a smaller snake, otherwise we would have been screwed. i shot it in the side and it bled. then, after it was starting to slowly die my dad stepped on its head to make sure of its death. and, it was striking, so it could have been bad if i didnt shoot it. goes to show that we do need a safety forum (trying to keep this on topic here ;) ).

Wow, just wow.
Interesting though notabob, it goes from "in the woods" to we are building a house there. Also, if the snake was striking, how did you get from the "woods" to wherever you keep your airsoft guns, and back to the woods before it had bitten your dad?
Futhermore, snake safety will tell you nothing more than back away from it slowly and leave it alone, your not gonna learn how to pick it up like Steve Irwin and move it somewhere else, so its a pretty stupid example for a safety thread.
Want to know saftey from natural things around Ohio or any other area? Read a book, ask a doctor, park ranger, etc. Theres no big mysteries to wildlife.
Guys guys.. please stop fighting over it.
Could snakes be an issue in the plausable health and saftey thread? Yes, it could be. A major one? No, not really. Bad example? No. Good example? No not at all. More of an OK example. Either way, Don't fight about it and get this thread locked.
I was more concerned about just having general stickies made about certian diseases that you can encounter, what are the signs of them if you get it, and how to treat it. Also, like general things like how to identify poison ivy, poison oak, etc. FPS issues, like what certian FPS guns can do if they are used in too close range. Etc.
Thanks

hey soultek, ever occur to you that we might have woods in our back yard? well, we do. i was at the front porch and my dad overturned a board in the back of the house. he told me to get my gun. my gun was beside me in its gun case on the porch so i grabbed it. why was it on my porch? simple; its my house, we have woods; i had hoped to get some target shooting in some time during the day. and me and my dad were shooting spiders (you gonna flame me for that one too?) :D . the point is, i didnt know what to do. a health and safety forum might would have prevented that.

Nota, i quite understood what you meant, i was mostly making fun of how your story changed so much, and then it did again.
Not trying to flame you though.
For the record, a sticky like foxtrot mentions could be somewhat useful.
(also for the record, first you were in the woods, then you and your dad were building a house, and finally your dad was building a house in the back yard while you were sitting on the front porch :p)

A locked sticky that can be added to when needed would be great, but filtering through stupid comments, and retarded bickering like the above would be frustrating.

foxtrot, i like and would support the idea
and notabob, better idea than I would have done, lured it to strike with my left hand, grabbed behind it's head with my right and either tossed it into a box for transport to another area, or slashed it with my ever present S+W SWAT tactical folder.
normally, not an animal activist myself I stil would have preferred it to be released alive into the wild, but the situation is not always clear, especially if it was a copperhead in NH....
in the future a a safety warning, don't lure a snake to strike unless you are really really fast, or have an unnatural immunity to poison.
but back on target- Safety = good.

yeah, the point was that it was a little baby (about a foot long) and it probably has a family chillin somewhere else on my property. we killed it because if we just let it get away we would most likely encounter it again when it grew up. i agree that safety is a plus and a neatly organized sticky would do the trick and if people wouldnt question everything someone says (my snake story) then the thread would be much better. i guess i could have slashed it with my kershaw folder that was in my pocket, but why? if it has to be killed, shooting it is much better.

What would be more frustrating to me would be filtering through complete disinformation like has already been posted in this thread. Whos gonna decide who creates this thread? If its open for discussion are we gonna get (no offense to you cobalt) bad ideas about how we should lure snakes to strike and grab them?
Or how about the guy who deleted his post saying how snakes were going to try to kill you? Sorry, but unless your being hunted by a 3 foot little snake, it will only strike in defense, and will likely not do that either, prefering to get away somehow.
Safety is first and formost responsibility of your own actions. And if this is the kind of information that would be provided in a "safety" thread, it would be a great disservice.

no doubt that was a bad idea! glad you caught on- that was part of the point- that this safety thread like any others would have to either be locked and stickied or moderated to avoid disinformation, however at the same time it very well may be, in edited, locked, and or moderated form, a valuable resource.
when it comes to fauna however, specific information such as pictures should be considered, as one may come across a brown spider in the woods but not know whether or not they are dealing with a brown recluse, whose bite is devastating and painful, and who populate the woods in NH and all over the east- not sure whether or not they appear in OH
personal responsibility is the hallmark of all safety, and knowledge can help to increase your sense of responsibility.

Yes obviously it was a bad idea and that was your point, my point was even if that kind of post popped up in a safety thread you run the risk of someone going, oh yeah i read about how you can do that. Thats all.
I mean, look at texx's post, he'll post about how springer can shoot faster than an aeg and youll get 3 posts " really?"
