Does anyone here ever target practice with their airsoft guns? You know, more than just setting hop-up, ect. If so, what kind of ranges do you shoot and and what kind of targets do you use?

Thanks,
Scott

I don't target shoot airsoft guns often, but when I do at these distances:

AEGs 100' to about 120'

GBBs 50 to 75 feet.

I generally shoot my mp5 at a range around 100', and I have found some really nice targets here (http://www.protargets.com/targets/index2.htm)

I can generally get pretty good groupings when it's not really windy.

When I'm bored and it's late I'll shoot across my room with my springers. It pays off when you need your backup, it becomes instinct. I've shot more ammo through my backup guns in my room than at people. The other day, my friends and I sat on my back porch shooting at pop cans about 100' away. We were using MP5 SD3's, and a TM M-16 AEG. We had a really good practice session.

Target practice is near essential if you plan to play in games against human targets.

Target acquisition is the biggest problem for most new shooters.

I bring this up because I've found that practicing for BOTH will help you more than just shooting at a single static target that can't shoot back.

If you have the area available, use what I use.
I use 9 aluminum pie pans, each stapled to a surveyor's lath (you can use 2"x2"'s from Lowes or equivalent).

3 of the targets are set at ranges from 35'-50'. Spaced across a 50' width.
4 of the targets are set at ranges from 50'-75'. Spaced across a 50' width.
The last 2 targets I'll vary between 75'-125'. Again, spaced across the 50' width of my backyard.

Each of the pie pans has a number painted on it.
At random, a number is picked and that corresponding pie pan is engaged.
Time limits for engagement is usually 3 seconds.
The shooter's back is toward the targets when the number is called.
Vary the stance you use. Move while engaging. Put a trash can in front of you while shooting and use it as cover - popping out and darting back behind.

My wife likes helping me with this and will alter the time limit for engagement and throw out multiple target numbers periodically.

Hope this helps.

P.S. One of these days we'll integrate one of these types of target practices into a game day.
It will be timed and scored.
Should be fun.

Now THAT is a useful exercise!

I hope my wife likes my new range.

i used to practice and strafe in the backyard shooting tagets sideways as i ran. unfortunately my moms pots have holes in them now. luckily she hasn't noticed! but that was back in the day when i had my super SPAS.

But shooting while moving helps. gotta keep your eyes on the sight. don't run, keep at a steady pace with legs bent.

Also have a friend fire a springer at you from a good distance and try to dodge shots, sooner or later your eyes will get a good hold on what the physics of a bb in flight will let you know where they are coming from and a chance to jump away. Pretty useful in Draws (my lunchtime show).

anyone ever have an unlimited supply of soda cans? and threw them in the air and shot them with their AEGs? I wanna try that. used to blow away the damn Pepsi BLUEs away with my Spas and let them burst. fun fun.

Only target shooting I've done is getting a netted laundry basket and taping up the front with printer paper that has a target drawn on it. Only other thing is when I crack open the dining room door a bit and shoot at the tree in the backyard that's about 20 feet away.

Anybody know if the BB traps sold on sites like Airsoft Atlanta can take the paper target replacements you find from Wal-Marts and such? I haven't seen anybody list extra targeting paper on an Airsoft site in a long while..

I think I'll have to do the pie pan thing, my aiming sucks. It'd help though if it was more than just shooting in a basic room, too many neighbors around to take Airsoft guns outside.

kendodude, i did the same. i shot a diet pepsi can (no one was gonna drink it anyways) with my benelli a few weeks ago and it exploded after the first shot from 40 - 50 feet.

You know what's really fun? Shake up a Soda can, and throw it a tree. I did it when I was like 9, went through like $30 worth of soda. Good times, good times.

My backyard is about 50 wide where I target practise. I take a bunch of old wood boards and set up firing lanes. I measure and put down a board at every 5-10 feet. Then I set up some obstacles to use as cover. They I set up about five different targets. One will be crouching behinds something, one will standing out in the open, one will be using a hostage as a shield, etc. It is great for CQB practise, but for field practise, I try to get some more shrubbery and obstacles and hide the targets better.

As for moving targets, i dont do much there, but sometimes ill have one of my friends behind some cover throw something like a pop-can or something like that and see if i can hit it.

The way I have it set up, I can change it around to do all kinds things for target practise. I guess you could call it a 'modular target field'

This sounds a little whacky but...

I have a crazy and bored friend. I hand him some goggles and thick clothes. He then proceeds to run like a madman about 70-80 feet away from me in various directions while I try to nail him with my P90. He likes it because he needs excercise, I like it because I get to nail someone. Its pretty cool because he fakes me out and stuff, not to mention my gun is still stock

Nice idea with the pie pans Glaeken, I might try that at my friends house to give my team some practice :)

I have five targets set up at betwean 50 and 75 yards for my sniper rifle, a ca m24 socom, then I have to grab a mp5, or any other aeg, and run 60 feet to were I have 10 targets set up for the aeg at betwean 80 and 120 feet and then I draw my pistol and with the first mag shoot at 15 targets at varius ranges and than reload and shoot one full mag into a head sized target at around 20 feet. It is a drill used by seals and other special forces witch test your abiltys while having a high heart rate witch is found in combat situations.

I saw something like that with multiple team members at swat sporting events on ESPN. Fun stuff to watch too! I Learned how to shoot a pistol with a riot/full sized shield! "Gangsta" style, but mroe controlled. And useful for them Homeboy nitesights right necromocramiooblah....

(like what sniper dude said)
It's important to target practice when your heart is pumping rather than when your calm. Do some push-ups or a little jogging before target practice so you wont be as calm. It's will be good because in a skirmish, most likely you will be doing a lot of running and your heart will be pumping and it will be a little harder to hold your gun still.
the navy seals do push-ups before target practicefor that reason...
