I have it, hella fun, i dont have it online yet, but i will in a few weeks. I know someone who beat the game in 4 hours on all difficulty settings (i think) in single player mode. While i beat it in 3 days...:o

I have Rainbow Six 3, but to be honest, I don't think it's all that impressive. The maps are tiny!! And the weapons selection sucks! Ghost Recon is a FAR better FPS (IMHO) than R63. Of course, I live in the boonies..maybe online play makes it a lot better?
I may have to rent SOCOM II and check it out.

My friend tried to get me to play the SOCOM games, and I just couldn't dig it.
The online play was just a bunch of people dancing around in circles trying to shoot each other with the M60, because apparently they couldn't figure out how to turn while strafing. :/
I liked RS3 singleplayer, but the online play was bad. There was a ton of lag even on cable, and no hit detection. At all. You actually couldn't tell who was going to win a firefight because they kept lag blinking around and there wasn't any bloodsplats or hit noises.

How could you say such a bad thing about a great game. Socom II isnt about "dancing in circles trying to shoot someone," its about teamwork and having tactical skills. Obviously you have not played the game too often beause you dont know what your talking about. But i guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. :o

You know back in the day Rainbow Six didn't have maps that were so linear. And the maps were well built for the situation, counter terrorism. You could make outlying plans on where your other team members (AI) would go and the way points to lead them there. The was much freedom to this. And honestly, HOW COULD YOU SAY GUN SELECTION IN RS3 SUCKS!!!! Sure, two pistols pisses me off. BUT FREAKING RIFLES AND SMGs!!!! How could you say such a thing about RS. It has a wide variety, even on Rainbow six 1 and 2. And hell I bet later on in life they'll release patches and maps with newer guns on Xbox live or on the internet.
If you are wondering, I do like SOCOM II. I am not much of a SOCOM fan, but I just like RS more. I like the more thinking and taking your sweet time to crack open a door and throwing in a flashbang and busting in with your men capping people and narrowing missing the hostage and taking down the terrorist.
SOCOM II is a different game. Not counter terrorism, It's along the lines of "inside" a battlefield mission or to have a special mission of getting rid of a nuke. RS has more options of what to do in situations. But SOCOM gives you mroe movement. It's fun, but to me, ya know....
You guys can't just compare these games like this.

Well, to be fair, I am comparing the XBox RS3 to PC games like Rogue Spear. Yeah, the game maps are great for CT missions, but I find the "planning" aspect lacking (You can only tell the other three guys to cover, breach and clear this door, etc.). In RS, you could give MUCH more detailed orders to your other team and NOT leave yourself alone while doing so.
In regards to weapons selection, I hate the way you outfit yourself in RS3. I also don't like who you can't outfit the other team members. And perhaps my biggest beef..why in the hell does the mission just end if Ding gets whacked? Does RS3 not have a chain of command??? Why can't Deiter or whoever take over?

yeah, i dunno. In the book it was from a third person perpective.
And yes, I do want to outfit all of my men with MAC11s and then me with my super insane Shotgun. damn them for not including the SPAS-12. At least there's a USAS-12.
It really pisses me off on the subject of the many things that have changed in RS. it really does.
Maybe it'll change in an RS4?
I guess they wanted guys who didn't understand the planning and ordering aspect of the game. At least the AI doesn't open the door all the way and stand in the middle only to be shot when you order him to Flashbang a room. it really does...

I would have to say in my honest opinion for a third person shooter, SOCOM II is the best. Now some may say MGS would be better, or maybe even Splinter Cell, but I think that SOCOM provides all the elements of awesome game play. It has stealth, lots of shooting at times, and its based on the SEALS... who can ask for more? Plus the arsenal of weaponry that you can get is incredible. Its great when you go with the M60 and just lay down the law.
I would have to say though that for a first person shooter, Ghost Recon is the best. It doesnt really rely on any stealth, but for the military aspect of weaponry, its great.

I modded ghost recon to use a mod of UT (infiltration)'s weapon sounds. As the weapon sounds in Ghost recon are pretty crap. Sound nothing like the real thing. Im playing Raven Shield on my PS2 right now actually. Unlike the PC version, i cant choose between supressed, or scoped weapons, and some of the missions are pretty lame. They toned it down WAY too much on ps2. but it's still fun. It's lacking some features lets say. the maps still look mint though. but before the missions, there is NO planning, which really pissed me off, and there isnt a m14, or a 1911 in game. Wtf? back to Rogue Spear it is. I still play that on PC, and if you ever see a guy using a 1911 for long range shooting, and a m14 for the close in work, it's me.

Dude i own SOCOM, i was one of the 1000 BETA testers, and have had the full version since day one. You can either find me under my ak-toting name =REDDARMY= or my Strictly going with the colt AnArmyOfOne* Come find me on either name in Captains only.
PS: I have Xbox Live and have RS3 and it is definatly NOT better. Its good and all, but its not really comparibly to SOCOM II

I too used the M14 in RS, but modded the full auto to the three round burst while giving it a much better scope. Tinkering with the Accuracy gave it damned near pin-point accuracy. Among other weapons, I replaced the original L85 (Lame-*** 85) with the terrorists' Ak74, I modded the .357 cal DE to shoot in three round burst, I gave the M16A2 back its full auto function (as god intended), and had a hell of a time playing the "Bunkers" level (I still like that level, even with all the lame barrels).
As for SOCOM, I played it once. I wasn't impressed by it as much as by Medal of Honor. Frankly, the difference between a Tac Sim and a Military-themed FPS is minimal. But Rogue Spear is a hell of a lot more serious and I enjoy sending my team mates to their deaths via Pre-Game Map...
I have had Rogue Spear since it was first releassed (Fall of 99) and have bought all of the expansions for it. I bought the game having sat down with the demo and finally deciding to spend $45 to get the entire experience. I have never regretted that decision.

dude, two different games.
Yes SOCOM give you more freedom.
Besides, I admit i do not like the layout of RS3. It just ain't like RS2...
If they did that. I guaranttee you would have a different more enjoyable game today.
These games are very different in their Genre.
As I said SOCOM is more battlefield. Sure you get to run around russian DOCKs and around a Cities and such, But the fact remains it's battlefield combat. Like Ghost Recon. You play it at a thrid person perspective. You move in large enviroments. Enviroments give you more freedom. You fire freaking rockets at tanks. No boomer. You have hordes of rebel soldiers coming at you on the last mission in that african city. There is a reason to snipe. Knife kills. sneaking though bushes
You are Special Forces.
SOCOM is fun.
I like it.
Rainbow Six is more Counter terrorism. You play as characters from a book (awsome book, you get to play as any of them in RS1 and 2). You play in CQB. You are given super cool items although not used for these types of situations, such as red phosperous still cool. No boomer. Hyper insane quick gun fights. The game scares you as hell when a guy pops out from a wall and is about to shoot a shotgun at you. Weaponry realism is freaking awsome. Gotta love flashbangs (heh Kendodude#2). ANd SUPER Co-op missions! Especially in RS2! I mean RS3 co-op is good an all with voice chat an stuff... but because of the maps being so linear what's the point? And i too gotta admit it's more serious.
You are SWAT/SAS/GIGN/HRT/RAINBOW SIX
I like Rainbow six.
Two different games. Stop arguing which is better. If you like it, That's great. This is like comparing HALO TO HALF LIFE!!!
Conflict: Desert Storm = Spec OPs (hehe 10$ game) = Sum of all fears
I say enough has been said.

I am addicted to SOCOM II!!! I just cant get enough of Foxhunt! By the way, Rainbow Six 3 is pretty lame multiplayer. 3vs3?? Nothing beats some 8vs8 SOCOM II fun( at least in terms of PS2 multiplayer)!! And regarding the M60E3-ITS A NOOB CANNON! Get a real gun! i would recomend the IW80a2...

Farcry owns. Just bought it today. The enemies arent scripted, and they dont stop looking for you once you blow your cover. The weapon damage and world physics are that much closer to perfection as well.

I don't even nkow you so no offence, but those games(RPG's) are for nerds. I stick to sports games, or games w/ guns, not running around in the woods w/a sword tryign to kill a dog or a giant *** bug. O and ps cryptic RS3 on Xbox Live is soo much better it is a little laggier but has 8v8 like socom.

badrunkadrunk you obviously have no idea what you are takling about. Farcry is one of the most realistic FPS(first-person shooters) out there today. everything about the game is ultra-refined and extremely true to real life. i personally have played it and can say it is flawless in it's realism, but the game play isn't all too impressive. as for your statement on RPG's don't rip on things you know nothing about. if you're calling farcry an RPG then i think you need to do some reading before you post again.

I saw a review for Farcry on XPLay, it looks great, but what's with the mutant critters? THAT ain't realistic!!! LOL
Scorpion
04-05-2004, 04:37 PM
yeah that was one of the "gameplay" issues i was referring to in my post. there are just some things in that game that shouldn't be there, mutants and certain enemies included..:)

Farcry takes place in the year 2020, so judging whether or not genetic mutants will be realistic is hard to tell.
I think unique adversaries in Farcry, Half-Life and Doom games make it that much more of a challenge, and a heck of a lot more interesting. If I had to spend 20 hours playing through a game against only gun-wielding soldiers, I would lose interest very quickly. However, add a 12-foot tall behemoth with steel armor and a rocket launcher for an arm, or a small ape-like creature that can leap 30 feet and tear your face off and you have a new twist to the game.
I am not saying realistic shooters are bad. I enjoy them as well. But come on, slaying a 100-foot mutated hampster with a fully-auto plasma rocket launcher can be fun too, ya know :)

BaDunkaDunk-The XBOX R63 is definetely better than the ps2 version, but the best online game for PS2 is definitely SOCOM II. R63 aint anything special on the PS2! (no offense to all you ps2 r6 fans...)
By the way, when it comes to FPS, its all about 16 player HALO baby!
*on a side note-when does GTA San Andreas come out to stores?? I suppose there will be more info on that at E3, but if any of you know the date you should post it.

i chose it because i'm unique:D it used to be Bobert in socom one because Bob + Robert = Bobert. But hey a screen name is a screen name. Like your name is ramrod on airsoft ohio and mine is kendodude. Think about it would you like to be killed by some guy named dairybarry its all about the intimidation factor. People will say oh this guy sucks i guess i don't have to play as hard and then bam! i kill you and you'll say lucky shot but it happens through out the whole entire match and then you realize omg he's amazing. Well really i don't know why i chose that name but doesn't matter. Like parents who name there son Jamie it really doesn't make that person more of a girl. I guess i chose that name because it came to my head, just like how people should choose to buy their first airsoft gun.
P.S. Out of this whole discussion all you remember is how uncool my name is by singling me out i think that's pretty uncool. You don't see everyone on airsoftohio with names like killer128 because they are unique names they've created themselves. All the guy was asking was for people who played socom 2 not "hey theres a kid named dairybarry lets pick on him" I mean i don't really think anyone on this site really gives a hoot what my name on socom 2 is.

Some good points. You can learn tactics from these games, especially America's Army. But, closed anyway. Say good-nite.
