In terms of performance, they'll be close enough to call identical. The only difference is that the M4 has an eg1000 as opposed to the eg700 of the XM. You wouldn't notice any difference in the ROF between the two on the field. And the extra bb per few seconds won't help you any in a firefight.
The M4 has a detachable carry handle if you wanted to use a scope or red dot without getting an additional rail. But the XM's carry handle gives your hand more space if you don't want any optics or don't mind buying a rail to mount on the carry handle for your optics. The M4 has a detachable flashider covering threading if you wanted to put a silencer on. You'd have to buy a new outer barrel assembly for the XM if you wanted to put a silencer on. The M4 stock has 4 positions where as the XM's has three. The difference won't matter much, but the M4's can be taylor made a little bit better in that respect. The M4 has a metal outer barrel where as the XM has a plastic outer barrel. It adds weight and a little bit nicer look, but no real performance differences. I think that's all of them (trade marks of course).
You'll have to decide what you want out of the gun and if the extra money for the M4 is worth it for you

ill just add a few more things to what Knief said. as in any M16 varient AEG, you will have the infamous barrel wobble, which can get a little annoying and mess with you accuracy. the M4A1 will have the this problem after a few weeks of use. you can fix really easy with just some plumbers tape and a pair of tweezers. the COLT XM177 E2 will amost definatly have this problem also, and you can fix it the same way. if you dont want to worry about the barrel wobble, look into the TM M733, which TM has fixed and almost eliminated the problem of barrel wobble. also, but in not 100% sure, is that the sights are different on the 2 models. the pistol grip on the M4 is is revamped, and is a little different then the one on the XM. my opinion is to go with the M4. if you are going to be more CQB oriented, then you might want to get the xm177 , or if you get the M4 just dont extend the stock.

the XM and M4 are roughly the same size

darn, forgot about the pistol grip ;)
A word about the m733 though. Barrel wobble has not been completely eliminated from it. The first m733 i came across had a rather severe case of wobble for a gun that supposedly doesn't have it.
using one over the other in CQB or woodland won't make any difference. Neither is better suited for a specific role. Unless you're looking to chuck the gun and get more distance (would be better for woodland, no?), the weight differential won't change the gun's role.

Of course the sights are different, the XM is alike to the A1 style sights, which are simpler. M4s and M733s and the like use the A2 style sights, which are more complex, but cooler looking, heheh.

As an owner of the XM, I thought I'd chime in. As far as barrel wobble goes, it has very little, I suspect mostly due to the plastic body, I'm not positive, but when I move the barrel, I can see the body move and I can hear it creak. I can tell you now, if you want something where you have a huge choice of metal bodies and accesories, this is not your gun, nor does it feature quick takedown, it is very irritating to get to the mechbox, and access the barrel, I know that the M4 can pop right open, but I'm not sure if the mechbox comes right out or not, it certainly doesn't on the XM. As far as metal bodies are concerned, there is only one I know of, at DEN, made by JAPAN or something, never heard of them. As far as the front end, I own the KM metal front, which is the same length, very good quality with a clockwise thread (marui uses a counterclockwise), a warning however, it does not include a front ring for the foregrip, that I had to rip off my marui front. The XM can pretty much be summed up as the poor mans M4 or 733 if you want the colt commando get the 733, unless you like the vietnam look, which I do, I'll someday get the metal body and XM flashider. Until then, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Private Message is usually the easiest way if you plan on asking a lot of little questions.
