Im getting an M4 carbine for christmas :D, and i was thinking if i should also get a tokyo marui M203 grenade launcher for it. If u have an M203 how do they fire and what does it use to fire.

There are a couple different types of M203, your best bet is to use the search function on the site, and see how many other threads exist that already answer this question..
Here is one of them..

hey Sgt. Watts, i dont own an M203 yet, but i will tell you what i know. the TM M203 is nothing more then a glorified shotgun, it uses shotgun shells just painted a different color, and only releases 3 bbs for every shot.
if you want one that acts like the real deal, you could look at the Sun project ones that fire an actual 40mm round with a certain number of bbs (a lot). i dont know much about the SP one, so if you want to know more you should talk to D_man.

Well, to correct you on something,
the SP { sun project } uses a 40mm grenade shell, it doesn't fire it, the bb's are put into the shell along with gas, its stuck into the M203, you pull the trigger, the shell flys folward from a pin stricking the gas thingy, and theres a part on the back thats ' jointed ' or something, that smashes into the front end and sends the amount of bb's you have in the shell, { 24, 25, 50, 165, etc } flying folward with a stream of gas, about 100 feet.
this is my guess on the process, I know for a fact the shell doesn't leave the 203.

The Sun Project launchers also cost an arm and a leg more. The launcher itself is more, the shells are $60 and up each and you have to buy gas. If you're just starting out and absolutely have to have an M203 I would go with the TM one (as I am guessing money does not grow on trees for you.) If you want a more realistic M203 then save that money and go for the Sun Project version later.
Also, just an opinion. Seeing as how the TM M203s basically just add weight (not very useful when you have an AEG attached to it unless you run out of ammo in said AEG) have you thought about putting the money you were going to spend on the M203 into something perhaps a bit more useful. There's internal upgrades, optics, flashlights, gear, extra mags, even gbbs that could be had instead. I know the look is killer. I love the look of my SP M203 RIS, but skirmish wise I don't use it. Only have two shells which are finicky. That's why I myself am thinking of selling mine to get morre useful items. Just thinking out loud here.

I have personlly witnessed one of those sun project shells (charged with gas) fire aprox 150 ft with some sting to them . Just ask Sabre . He is the owner of them . He also has a great bit of info on there operation as well .

i have a sunproject m203, ris edition. heres my input. it cost me about $260 with a 18 round 40mm catridge. It is damn badass, but if i had the chance, i would have done some things different. First, i would have bought the regular non-ris edition, because it looks that much better and natural. 2nd, make sure u know what kind of shell u are buying. i bought one with hopup, which was the worst mistake of my life. Pretty much the hopup were these rubberbands that surround these chambers inside the 40mm catridge, give it enough time and firing, they will all snap. so i had to order a new set of rubberbands pretty much, which looked like they would be 10 cents, but ended up costing me 20 dollars. but all in all, the TM one sucks bad. my friend had one, and then saw a SP one, and immediatly ebayed the TM and bought himself a SP one. As for functionality, its not pratical at all. theres no way ur gonna hit someone with ur m203, unless ur prepping for it. its not natural for someone to switch to the m203 trigger when they already have their other finger on the aeg trigger. plus the shells are expensive and a pain in the *** to load and carry around. i mean, if u have enought money, and really are bored, get the SP version, its badass, but dont expect it to drastically improve ur performance or chance to get a kill

The thing about the sun project one is the fact that shells for it are like 50$ if not more, not only that, but you need an adaptor for it so it fits the gun. I'm just going to have to wait and see if I can earn enough money. I saw a video of a TM M203 and it sucks royally. So i'm just gonna wait.
