View Full Version : How much benefit from extending barrel?

I'm considering getting an MP5K-PDW, putting a longer inner barrel on it, and then putting on a silencer to conceal the longer barrel. The barrell will be extended by a few inches; probably about as long as a regular MP5 barrel, I'm guessing.

Will this be worth the trouble? Improving the accuracy and power would be nice, but not if the improvement is negligible.

Thanks

gah...hmm..i know it would help..but not by much. I mean, a stock MP5 can shoot just as about as far as a stock M4....and then again..this is just head knowledge..i've never really tested this before. I dont THINK it would make THAT much of a difference..unless it was a tightbore..then it might be different..I dunno...you might want to wait till someone that does to post and find out for sure :p

Heres a quick rundown of the variables and if it adds range and power or doesnt.
Longer= Adds
Tightbore= Adds
Higher FPS= Adds

Really, thats the only 3 things you can do. YOu can upgrade internals and help add to it, but if you dont, then your best off getting a tightbore of some longer barrel. A longer STOCK barrel will help, but not as much as a tightbore would.

Thing is, when you come to reality, on a stock gun with longer barrel, unless its like a psg-1 barrel, you probably wont notice much of a difference.

Hold on i have heard of everything else, but what is a "Titebore"

A tightbore is a barrel, usually made of Titanium (TN) but sometimes Brass (BS), that has a smaller diameter than a stock barrel. They usually have a diameter of 6.03mm or 6.04mm, versus the stock AEGs' barrel of 6.08mm. This traps a little bit more air behind the BB which "supposedly" helps it reach a higher velocity, as well as keeping the BB on a more stable flight path.

The only problems with the tightbore barrels is that they have a lower tolerance of damaged or low-grade BBs.

Hope that helps.

TM barrels = 6.12mm~6.15mm
CA barrels = 6.08mm
Systema = 6.04mm
KN = 6.04mm
Prometheus = 6.03mm

BBs are usually ~5.98mm. So having a tightbore leaves little room for dirt and other foreign objects, which could cause jams.

Good article on tightbore barrels:

A tightbore barrel usually works best when combined with a spring upgrade. Putting a tightbore barrel on a stock gun won't do all that much than if you were to put it on a 350-400fps gun.

OK, I think that about answers the question for me. The thing is I dont want to use a larger (external) battery, because I don't like the way it looks. So I was hoping to squeeze out some extra power from the longer barrel. I'll probably just leave it stock, it's for CQB anyway. :)
