View Full Version : What grinds your GEARS?

You know what really grinds my gears.... When posters bash people over poor grammar and spelling. My personal opinion is as long as you can read it and understand it, then it's all good. I understand that moderaters probably spend hours at a time cycling and going thru all of poor stuff. But seriously you don't always have to be proper. Airsoft is a about having fun and being "Awesomness" like me. But me thing is, if you have a problem with someones grammar/spelling, PM them about it. So that way you don't make them look more like a fool then they already might. I'll be the first to admit I am no English major. But seriously, it's just a posting, you don't always have to get your panties in a wad. Calm down, relax, and enjoy life. Also Airsoft.
I post this thread for disscusion of things that don't sit right with you. Please no personal vendetta's. Only general things such as I posted. Please feed back or comments about Grinding of your GEARS.
Also I understand people don't like "Newbies." But think about your first time of being at an airsoft event. Newbies need your help. So with a small donation as little as 93 cents a day they could one day become an elite veteran. or I could take the money and buy some cheeseburgers. But remember "Newbs" need your help.

There certainly are a lot of people out there (in the world, not just here) who write so poorly that the meaning is lost or anbiguous. Those people I would feel bad publicly ridiculing.
There are also a lot of people who write poorly on purpose, and I have no problem with someone singling them out. But yes, there's a third category in which people belong who make mistakes but can still be understood clearly, and those people I will almost never criticize (except maybe as an academic exercise).
Airsoft Ohio is less tolerant of poor communication than most forums, and I think that's fine, but it seems to me that our higher standard has started a trend where it's cool to jump on someone's communication problems, even if those problems are trivial and inconsequential, just to show that they're hip with the trend.
The question I ask myself is, "How do we continue to encourage our comm. standards while simultaneously discouraging the comm. nazi trend?"

I agree with what you're saying about the people who do it to be cool. But what I'm talking about is the people who don't know what the home keys are. Some of the older generation that was not exactly raised around computers and such. Like some people in their late 30's - 40's. People who obviously lack communication skills over the internet. It doesn't mean they are not intelegent. They just lack the skills of online chatting to hot babes. Sometimes just let them slide.
Thanks.....

Usually grammar and spelling is not a major problem. It becomes a problem when an individual makes consistent errors, or when they purposefully use bad grammar, slang or leet speak. It gets old and to some degree shows the maturity of the person posting the message.
Because airsoft is a sport about honor and responsibility, it is out of respect that we demand a higher standard. I personally doubt that someone who can't speak or refuses to speak to me in an online forum in a respectful manner will have the same respect in handling their airsoft guns responsibly.
I think it boils down to telling the person, "Hello, please be sure to check your grammar and spelling before you post your message here. We uphold a high standard of language use here, and all AO members are expected to adhere to the rules for grammar and spelling."
That is much more encouraging than other members turning into grammar nazi's. I've talked with people who've said they wouldn't post on AO anymore for that reason.

I think a few things are important with spelling/grammar. We all make errors from time to time, but there is an integrated spell check on this forum that makes minimizing them easy. I don't fret when a word or two is spelled wrong, because like I said even the best typists make errors. But consistent problems make posts more difficult to read in my opinion, which in turn makes responses harder to give. People on this forum want to help solve problems, but we can't if the post is ambiguous or poorly written.
Also, the general public comes to know airsoft through public exposure, through news sources and forums like this. When others who lack adequate knowledge of the hobby see the poor grammar, they will make judgments. Should they consider airsoft immature based on grammar alone? No, but people make stereotypes and judgments, and there is no getting around that.
Also, how you speak and type in your every day life will affect these skills down the road. When you write a term paper, you show your mastery of the English language. However, you actually learn skills, tendencies, and habits through every day typing and talking. Here is my question: how much longer does it take for a person to type "you" instead of "u"? This isn't text messaging where you only have a few buttons and have to go through a variety of methods to spell things. In that case, it does very well save time. But on the computer, you have a full fledged keyboard. Of course, there may be those who are "hunt and peck" typists, but again you could use this as a learning experience. Computers are becoming involved in almost every job, some way or another. Being able to type in the future will be a near necessity.
I feel that with features like spell check integrated into the forum, it is easy to use proper English and in the end it is is better for everyone. The individual will develop good habits that will translate into school and work. The reader can easily understand the topic, and can reply with specificity and accuracy to quickly solve problems or answer questions. Finally, the image portrayed to the public can be more mature and sophisticated. In the end, everyone wins!
Of course, I do agree with you that often times people overreact with their responses. A simple and polite PM will go a lot farther than name calling and bashing ever will.
Some of the older generation that was not exactly raised around computers and such. Like some people in their late 30's - 40's. People who obviously lack communication skills over the internet.
I actually laughed out loud when I read those lines. The old people in their 30s and 40s never had it so easy as the "kids" do now using the internet. We had to worry about if the single phone line to the BBS was busy so we couldnt get online at 1200 baud (theres a word that dropped off the face of the earth). Those old people in their 30s, 40s and 50s are who created the rules for online chat.

As for the grammer and spelling issue, I don't expect anyone to be 100% perfect with either. But as the mentioned "leet speak", txt spk, and complete absense of punctuation bothers me. I have yet to post concerning anyone's use of spelling or grammer, but it is hard to follow what they mean, when you can't decipher what they are saying. Utilizing proper punctuation can drastically change the tone of a post. Being that this is a message board, I cannot use body language, tone of voice, or one's emphasizing of certain words to identify what kind of mood they are in when choose those words.

Alsip87,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but does all of this stem from the reaction to your dad's posts? If so, let me make the point that Oldschool should know better. He has been around a long time and should understand the importance of propper grammer and punctuation. Take a look, his posts are sloppy and when some have mentioned it, he pulls out the "I'm a vet" card. Now if you are tired of members criticizing him for his laziness, then you need to talk to him. Age has nothing to do with it and frankly I find it insulting. Before you start a post critisizing those who corrected oldshool, look inward and understand why they we doing it. He and others alike need to play by the basic rules of the forums. There is no exception unless his shift key is broken. Spelling and grammer issues are a violation of forum rules and could lead to banning. Forum rules are taken seriously and a lot of slack is given. Only those who are repeat offenders are dealt with.
(1) Spelling and Grammar does have its place on this forum.
(A) Not all of our members speak ENGLISH as their first language. So having proper spelling and grammar does help our NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING members understand what a person is writing.
(B)Communication is an important part of our society. Taking the time to properly format a sentence shows that you are an educated, mature person with excellent communication skills and a possible future in technical writing. A person who can convey his thoughts into legible coherent sentences is doing a greater service to the community with which he wishes to be a member.
(2) If being encouraged to give your best to:
(A) allow others to understand what you are saying;
(B) to efficiently make use of the language you have chosen to speak;
and (C) convey your intended meaning through the wondrous marvel of mature and educated written communication
"grinds your GEARS," then perhaps:
(3)You might endeavor to visit other website which do not place as much of an emphasis of using proper language skills taught to most Junior High students to convey various messages used in communicating a general theme through the marvelous wonder of manual and written forms of communications.
(A) That would be marvelous.
(B) That would help others ascertain your level of severity and thus invest their time and knowledge in communicating using the aforementioned means of communication.
(C) Rightly so, I might add.

(5)End Notes:
Paragraph 2 and 4 were rewritten to be less offensive. Paragraphs 5 and 7 were excellent sources of fiber, during initial printouts of the rought draft. Paragraph 1 was editted to remove excessing cursing, particularly the use of "F*** this F***ing sentence" which was deemed harmful and quite contrary to the general theme. Paragraph 6 was deemed pornographic and was removed by Iron Maiden for further study.

You're going to ban someone just because they don't use the shift key. I understand the chat talk is unacceptble. I don't agree with everything he said. The whole vet thing. It's not just him. Some of you people just pick at every little thing. I know what you are saying. But not everyone is an elite typer like some of you all. That is kind of low to ban someone who has poored in money into a sport that is growing. Helped set up events. Help train younger airsofters to understand things better in gamplay( going by AO rules). Has done vending at multiple sites. Has promoted events/ retailers. You all would ban someone just because of poor grammar. I mean it's not like he does it on purpose. He's just a crappy typer. I undertsand you don't want people who type with numbers characters etc. But I guess it's a lost argument. It just aggrivates me when people get on other people directly.
Maybe I'm a little more defensive beacuase he is my dad. But he has helped this sport a lot. Granted we haven't played in two years. Besides Saturday.
But what ev. Agree to disagree I guess. I don't know.

alsip87,
Put the breaks on, nobody is going to ban oldschool. I was just trying to point out the motivation for this thread. I know your dad and in the past he has done 100 times more for airsoft then those who were correcting him. It's just that he should understand the critisism. He should know that leading through good example is the right way to go. I was a little surprised that oldschool would be so relaxed on something that has always been taken seriuosly on AO. It just keeps this place nice and tidy.
Sorry to offend and I forgot to say welcome back. I hope your and his furture events are as awesome as the past ones.
Oldschool,
C'mon, you know better.;)

04-21-2008, 02:02 PM
You did no offending. I understand what both sides are saying. Well I'm the other side. duh!. I guess I was motivated to do this because of that point. But I also wanted to do it to see what people would say. Whether it be pertaining to airsoft or everday life. I know it doesn't make him look good to use poor grammar. It aggravates me. But he honestly can not help it. Typing does not always show your intellegence or maturity. I think it shows some. But people who have played with know he may not be the brightest crayon, but he aint no dude. Double negative. How do you like that.

04-21-2008, 02:58 PM
Cheap BB's ...
The key to good forum posting is revision. You may not find a mistake the first time through your post, so go through it again. Read over your post meticulously and rephrase things that seem even a little bit wrong. If you do that before you hit "Post Reply", you should be fine. No grammar or spelling Nazi will pick you apart if you just stay within your range of words and type them out correctly.
Sure, having a way with words or being grammatically inclined is advantageous, but simple revisions and typing words correctly will make you seem like you've got a good bit of intelligence operating those fingers across the keyboard. Big words may make you seem smart, but a solid foundation to a house is much better than a fancy front door and a bright green lawn.
Tip: If you speak like you're in an English class at all times, then you will not have a problem with English.
If you're of a different country which speaks a different "native tongue" or language (or you're born of this country, but were raised by people who didn't speak English), then I can understand. Though... if you're born in an English speaking land around people who speak English, shouldn't you practice proper use of the language?

+78932759875897. Donnie Darko is screwed up.
Bad grammar/spelling bugs me. But what bugs me is that people are arrogant enough to ignore when you request that they have better grammar. They may say "o dont wry,its ONly teh internetz!!1 lawl. hey look @ these lolcatz!", but it is still ignoring. If you ever need a question answered, and you ask it using poor grammar/spelling, then 95% of the time you won't get a good answer. Some people may guess what you are saying, and they may fail. Most people won't even try. But a lot of people will tell you to fix up your post, so that they can read it and properly answer your question. But if you refuse to do so, that is when you will get crap. It's not really a hard thing to ask of someone. It's not like your life will be wasted by just putting in that little extra effort and making a legible post.

As a member of the "older generation", let me say that I was a moderator ( we called them sigops) using a 300 Baud modem before most of the members here were born. Proper grammer and spelling are important. Not everyone here knows each other personally. What you say and how you say it determines how a person percieves you. There are no voice inflectiions to denote humor or just exactly what a person intends to say.

Most of what I wanted to say on this subject has been said...
Use the provided spell checker. If you can't spell a word use an online dictionary or a search engine to get the correct spelling. The text window you write your post in shows misspelled words with a red underline--it's a no-brainer.
Get into the habit of proof-reading your posts. I do this almost obsessively, but I've been posting on forums since the BBS days (i.e. 20+ years ago), so it's ingrained into my head.
Typing improves over time. Take the time to use punctuation and capitalization and you'll find yourself typing faster in no time.
If you make a poor impression online (i.e. your grammar, spelling and incoherent babble), people won't respect you as an intelligent human being.
The word "grammar" is spelled with an "a", not an "e". GAH!
Communication isn't rocket science. You get out of it what you put into it.
