Ive tried yahoo search and found nothing.
Has anyone ever used in skirmish these or know of what they can stop?

I ask this because at EAG I had been nearly smoked out of a buliding, of course with --ender--. Im sure most of you have heard the story of him and the tower. After what he went through and what I went through we are getting masks, lol.

any help would be appreciated.

I have seen many a post about gas mask lenses shattering on Arnies. Dont remember the models, but one was a britsh model and one was a US model...

I wouldn't recommend it.

Myself and Deltasniper have searched Arnies for these threads and found nothing. Can you submit a link for us?, we are considering having these as 'team issue'.

the m-17 gas mask is both obsolete as a gas mask and really unsafe for airsoft. this was covered in the original AO before the hack.

I also had a hard time finding the posts on Arnie's, however, I DO know of a picture in Arnie's gallery somewhere that shows the result of a broken lense, not in a point blank test, but from a good distance in a game, I'll try to track it down.

its not obsolete as a gas mask for airsoft purposes Cobalt... when the army says that.. they mean that it wont filter bio warfare as well as the new m40 does. In airsoft, Ive never been hit by any anthrax or cholera or some crap. Were worried about smoke... which it will filter i more or less gaurantee you (assuming the mask and filters are in decent repair.) The reason we chose it is the ease of acquiring them at low prices. Just so you know some military units im pretty sure still have the m17 (so i think. not positive.) kinda scary huh.

we were thinking along the lines of reinforcing the lenses in them with some simple plastic. especially if we did it in layers i think it would work. you know, put a piece of fairly decent plastic say 1/4 inch from the original lense. It would absorb most of the impact before it ever hit the lense. if it went throgh, there would be limtied energy as it hit the main lense. (they do this on tanks sometimes.) This would all of course be tested by our friends 420 fps g3 sg/1 before ever being brought to a game.
What do you guys think?

Sure that should work, get some thicker plastic pieces the same shape as the lense and attach it right over the lense, and you will be ok. If the new lense itself can take the blow alone, you will be MORE than safe when combined on top of the first lense. Good idea.

okay- that is actually a pretty cool idea- let me know when it's tested for safety- you could probably cook up some cool scenarios by differentiating people with gas masks and non.

in regards to obsoletion of the m-17 as an ACTUAL gas mask (as opposed to an airsoft one)

I had on good authority about a year ago, that the manufacturor of their filters stopped as in ceased production of the filters a year before then- and the filters had a shelf life of approximatly 1.5 years... leading me to conclude that they are not only phased out of military service, but also unable to protect the wearer. now, as to whether or not an aftermarket filter has been produced I am unawares, but if you get a black or olive drab one in plastic that is mil-issue- check the date. if it's over 1.5 years old, might as well wet a handkerchief and breath through the anthrax. good luck.

if I recall correctly, on the OG AO, Dumborat had discussed using these masks but found their lenses to be inadequate and the flow of air restricting.

Yeah, thanks, we kind of thought so.
But we dont really plan to do it as far as play scenarios in them.
They are limited use for us, only because where we play the use of the pyrotechnics is authorized. On mltiple occasions weve had teamates be "smoked out" of buildings, which is why its going to become a required issue item for our team now.

You are fully correct in the assessment that they restrict oxygen. Thats why id really not suggest playing all out games in them.
