Around the turn of the century, New York City Policeman had copper badges. People called them "coppers", which was later just shortened to "cops".

I was surprised that nobody got this. There wasn't really anyone that got close. I said "eastern bloc", not "Russian", and most of the guesses were Russian pistols that actually WERE adopted.
