View Full Version : Necro-Posting: Serious Problem or Nuisance?
Necro-posting is generally considered an Internet Forums taboo. This is where a person posts in a thread that has been dead for quite some time. Sometimes continuing a conversation or attempting to revive something that may have been best left to the confines of the forums.
I plan to do a 30-part investigation into the patterns of Necro-posting on AO to answer some tough questions.
What is Necro-posting?
When did this become a problem?
Wasn't Necro a Moderator?
How can this issue be addressed?
Stay tuned.

It's annoying when it happens, but it's only a problem when the necro post is totally irrelevant and not adding any new information. Sometimes it's better to revive an old post with new information rather than start an all new one.

Seriously, if I have to choose between having a single thread that's 80 pages long, or 80 threads that are one page long, I'd rather have the single thread.
As has been previously stated, Necro-posting just to say "that's a good idea" or "that's AWESOME!!!11!1shiftoneone!!" is annoying as hell.

It's not bad if the new information is pertinent to the thread. The only problem though is that most necro posts aren't. A certain person was really badly dinged about a week ago because he necroposted in a thread just because "I found this thread and was thinking of makeing my own". (If you want to know who I'm talking about PM me). If the new information is logically placed and not just put there because the person can then it is fine. But if you want to follow the above person's idea then why not just make your own new thread?
I think you should add an option to the poll - seriously fine. I never understand why people are so against this other than it being etiquette for polite society. Necro posting is such an ugly term. How about "invigorative discourse"?
Well, there are several other names for it - Franken-posting, Zombie posting, - Brady Black Posting, to name a few.

One reason that people are so against it is that you aren't just reviving an old thread you are also possibly reviving old forgotten arguments. Like take for example the thread "what bb leaves the bloodiest mark" (you can find this in the hall of infamy). There was a pretty bad agurment going on in that. Granted for this following scenario to work Deamon couldn't have been banned so lets just pretend he wasn't. Also the thread isn't locked or in the hall of infamy.
10 years after "what bb leaves the bloodiest mark" is stopped. It hasn't been closed everyone has just forgotten about it. It is a peaceful day on airsoft ohio. Oh look, there is a brand new member. Where is he going. Look he is looking at ancient threads. He has found "what bb leaves the bloodiest mark" he is now reading said thread. He decides to make this remark. "ha! Deamon ur so stupid. If you want to leave a blody mrk than u shod jst us ths gr8 supr pwerfl mini electic cybergun (cybergun pwns) MP5 sniper rifle of death and destruction!" (notice the semi-accurate newb spelling) Now little (insert some random name here) has started the argument again.
Cut to 1 week later. Loki with his wonderful hammer of bannation (is that a word?) has not only gotten rid of (name that you entered at previous parentheses), but he has also banned Deamon for random cussing and many other things (OH yeah well my PTW mini M16 is WAY better than your s***y MP5). Hence the problem with necro posting as told by bubbaplay
(send all donations to my agent)
You really should have read "what bb leaves the bloodiest mark?" before you read this. That is the only way it will make sense.
Edit: if you still feel the need to necropost after you have read this, make sure you wear a helmet so that when Loki hits you with his hammer it doesn't hurt as much!
Note: for people that don't speak fluent noob you may buy a translated version of the above for $99.99

You can always unsubscribe from the thread so it woul'nt come back and haunt you.

Unfortunately, this one will never go away. Using common sense, folks probably shouldn't post to a thread after it falls off the top 25 UNLESS they have something relevant to add. Hah, like that will ever happen.....got to get those post counts up....hence Loki's post titled "Since people here can't seem to act like grown ups...."
Seriously, don't think we should lock them out as once in a while something relevant/important does come up on an old thread.

People take things like necro posting a bit too serious, yes it is annoying yes it does suck but sometimes it actully brings back something good to talk about and like loki said if it's between one 80 page thread and 80 1 pages threads I'll take one thread anyday.

I think that if the necro-poster doesn't have something vitally new to add, he or she will probably get hammered for their transgression.
Like most things, it can be used or abused, and a rule regarding necro-posting would probably be as damaging as it is beneficial.

Like it's been said before, necro-posting isn't necessarily evil, but when people do it just to boost their post count, it is corrupted.
I'll admit, i necro-posted on a gren-gas thread, but it was because the original question was never answered, and i answered it.
Forums are tools, necro-posting is a way to contribute... and it's only a problem when people don't.

Look, if its good solid info and it pertains to the subject, its eating up less bandwidth.
If its stupid, then the perpetrator will surely get some negative reputation.
Either way, your going to be lambasted for not searching, or necroposting.
